Dominican Republic police report finding two bodies that "match the characteristics" of Portia Ravenelle and Orlando Moore, the New York couple who failed to return from a late March vacation an all-inclusive resort in Samana.
Police spokesman Colonel Frank Felix Durán said fishermen informed authorities of a vehicle on the seabed near kilometer 19 of the Las Americas highway.
Divers had not recovered the vehicle due to the water conditions, but police believe the couple suffered a traffic accident while driving to Santo Domingo's Las Americas International Airport for a flight departing at 2 a.m. on March 27.
Police did recover the body of a man they presume to be North American. In addition, Durán said the Darío Contreras hospital reports emergency personnel treated "a woman with multiple trauma who [was] unconscious" and later died, with her body remaining unclaimed.
Durán said the woman's body was later sent to the National Institute of Forensic Sciences. Police are reportedly working to determine if the fingerprints from the bodies match the couple.
Moore and Ravenelle traveled to the Dominican Republic on March 23. While they stayed n Samana, their return flight was scheduled to depart from the capital city of Santo Domingo, a two-hour drive from the Samana region. The couple had rented a car for the late-night drive but never arrived at the airport.
