More often than not, spring vacations are a time to make the most of a break in an academic calendar: Whether related to your child's school, your own college studies or another type of educational program.

The annual frenzy surrounding educational spring breaks and the accompanying beach getaways that have practically become de rigueur often overshadows the many other reasons spring can be such an enjoyable and engaging time to travel.

Depending on where you visit, spring offers an opportunity to witness fields of wildflowers in bloom, take part in spring festivals, or enjoy a few last ski runs of the season as temperatures warm.

If a spring getaway has piqued your interest and you need a little non-beach vacation inspiration, read on for seven destinations that offer a memorable getaway in their own right this time of year.

Santa Fe, New Mexico

The New Mexico capital of Santa Fe, which sits in the Sangre de Cristo foothills, offers an elevated take on spring travel, say locals. Think: Sun-soaked days, cool high-desert evenings, and a lineup built for adults who want culture with their cocktails.

Events on tap include The Canyon Road Spring Art Festival (which takes place May 9), a day when galleries and studios along the city's most storied arts corridor open for new exhibitions, artist talks, and after-hours mingling.

Up next, the Santa Fe International Literary Festival (from May 15 through May 17) brings three days of conversations and curated events to the Santa Fe Convention Center, drawing acclaimed writers and an engaged, book-loving crowd.

Also noteworthy and marking its 10th anniversary in 2026, the Santa Fe Margarita Trail adds a celebratory thread all season long, with 50-plus stops serving classic lime and inventive mezcal- and chile-forward riffs via a self-guided passport or app.

Added bonus? Santa Fe's compact, walkable core makes it easy to move between adobe-lined streets, galleries, and cocktail bars without feeling rushed during your explorations here.

Portland, Oregon

A city located on the northwestern border of Oregon, Portland offers much to love. That includes art galleries, abundant green spaces, and a vibrant culinary scene. But when spring comes, the city is especially breathtaking.

"From mid-March through early April, cherry blossoms transform Portland into a canopy of soft pink and white," says Andrew Moore, from Travel Portland.

"As the season unfolds, rhododendrons, azaleas, and roses bloom across parks and gardens throughout town, making it one of the most beautiful times to explore all the city has to offer," Moore adds.

For visitors hoping to catch peak blossoms, Moore recommends checking the newly launched Cherry Blossom Tracker from the Portland Japanese Garden.

Meanwhile, just 32 miles outside the city in Woodburn, the annual Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival (March 20 - April 26) is a can't-miss spring tradition, offering 40 acres of vibrant blooms for an unforgettable day trip. Festival highlights include the Tulip Trail Run, farm and wine tours, and even hot air balloon rides offering panoramic views of the vivid fields below.

Charleston, South Carolina

A true southern charmer, Charleston offers a quintessential warm‑weather escape to welcome spring. It's a time in the city when azaleas and camellias explode into color from the cobblestone streets of the Historic District to the oak‑lined byways of Mount Pleasant and North Charleston.

Visitors can spend time strolling beneath the blooming magnolias and centuries‑old live oaks draped in Spanish moss at Magnolia Plantation and Gardens (the oldest public garden in America) and along the Ashley River's storied corridor, where peak blooms and mild temperatures make garden‑hopping especially magical.

Across the harbor, Mount Pleasant's waterfront parks and Shem Creek boardwalk offer sunny afternoons ideal for waterside dining and dolphin‑spotting, while nearby barrier islands like Sullivan's Island, Isle of Palms, Kiawah Island, and Seabrook Island provide wide, uncrowded beaches perfect for a first barefoot walk of the season.

Spring in Charleston also brings a varied calendar of cultural happenings. That includes The Charleston Festival (March 18 - April 11), which celebrates the region's architecture, history, and decorative arts through house and garden tours, lectures, and special events that open otherwise private spaces to the public.

In addition to that signature event, Charleston offers a great deal to keep visitors busy come spring. Additional options include exploring the city's many historic sites, taking harbor tours, or simply soaking up the coastal city's charm without the crowds that often accompany other times of year.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

With its prime location at the entrance to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Gatlinburg offers visitors direct access to spring displays of blooming wildflowers and fresh mountain greenery. The town has long been known as the prime base for scenic hikes, waterfall viewing, and wildlife spotting. And during spring you can do all of of those things while the dogwoods, redbuds, and trilliums begin to flower.

“Visitors can explore a vibrant tapestry of native wildflowers blooming along more than 800 miles of scenic trails," says Chelsea Trott, from the Tennessee Department of Tourist Development Communications Manager.

After all the quality time in nature, visitors can head back to Gatlinburg to enjoy the variety of attractions, dining and entertainment located in town. "That balance of natural beauty and unforgettable experiences makes Gatlinburg a standout spring break destination," adds Trott.

Spring also brings notable local events to Gatlinburg, including the Smoky Mountain Wine Fest (March 14), during which visitors can sample regional wines while enjoying mountain views, along with seasonal craft shows and outdoor festivals.

With mild temperatures, fewer crowds than summer, and vibrant natural color across the hillsides, spring offers a mix of relaxation, outdoor adventure, and small-town charm.

Borrego Springs, California

There are few better times of year to visit California's Borrego Springs and Anza-Borrego Desert State Park than in spring, when you can take in the vibrant desert blooms of wildflowers. This year, thanks to ideal rainfall conditions, wildflowers are carpeting sections of the desert in vibrant shades of yellow, purple, and orange; a rare and breathtaking transformation.

To be fair however, the wildflower display is merely one reason to visit this time of year.

"Spring also brings more comfortable daytime temperatures, making it the perfect season to explore miles of scenic desert trails, slot canyons, and dramatic badlands landscapes [in Borrego Springs] before summer heat sets in," says Fiorella Yriberry, a travel expert with the rental platform RVshare.

For those not familiar, Anza Borrego Desert State Park, a sprawling, untouched natural landscape, offers a variety of easily accessible slot canyons and palm groves to explore, as well as wind caves sculpted over thousands of years.

While you're in the area, don't miss spending time in Borrego Springs, the small community bordering the park where you'll find restaurants, shops, and a handful of hotels. Meanwhile, on the outskirts of town, be sure to explore the iconic Sky Art Metal Sculptures that punctuate the desert.

Created by artist Ricardo Breceda, the sculptures have been described as whimsical, haunting and delightful. They are indeed all of those things and more. The caravan of sculptures, which have become beloved local treasures and a major attraction, includes towering dragons, dinosaurs, prehistoric elephants, ancient camels, a saber-toothed cat, and much more. And all of these creatures are set against a stark desert landscape. (Hint: visiting around sunset provides the best photo opportunities.)

Added bonus and reason to visit: Borrego Springs is one of the few designated International Dark Sky Communities around the world, meaning you can't beat the nighttime stargazing here either. The program certifies that participating communities, parks, and protected areas worldwide are official, preserved dark-sky sites thanks to responsible lighting policies and public education.

"Between the wildflower displays, clear skies, and wide-open scenery, spring is truly the most magical time to experience this desert destination," says Yriberry.

Victoria, British Columbia

Perched on the southern tip of Vancouver Island, Victoria, British Columbia is another especially memorable destination to experience all that spring has to offer.

Boasting the mildest year-round climate in Canada and known as Canada's "City of Gardens," Victoria welcomes spring early with pastel pink cherry blossoms beginning in February. Visitors hoping to catch peak cherry blossoms can explore rows of blooms on aptly named View Street, or by walking the grounds of Hatley Castle & Gardens, a national historic site. There's still more blooms to be observed around Government House.

Victoria also happens to be home to the iconic and stunning 55-acre Butchart Gardens. Located in Brentwood Bay (just 30 minutes outside Victoria), this remarkable attraction is filled with every type of flower (and gardening style) imaginable, and throughout the spring season, the property comes to life with over 300,000 brilliantly colored bulbs for visitors to stroll past.

The gardens were created in 1904 by Jennie and Robert Butchart, a wealthy family that had formerly operated a cement quarry on the site. It was Jennie Butchart in particular who decided to pursue her ambitious gardening vision as cement production exhausted the site's limestone deposits. The result of that effort is a garden that today is made up of millions of bedding plants in over 900 varieties. Don't miss the Japanese gardens, the Italian garden and the sunken garden.

Bardstown, Kentucky

Spring is a charming time to visit Bardstown, as the rolling Kentucky countryside turns lush green and flowering trees brighten the town's historic streets.

Mild temperatures make it perfect for strolling through the picturesque downtown and touring iconic bourbon distilleries like Heaven Hill and Maker's Mark, where spring brings vibrant landscaping and colorful grounds.

The season also features popular events such as the 80th Annual Bourbon Open at My Old Kentucky Home (May 15 - May 16), along with outdoor concerts, farmers' markets, and community celebrations that begin ramping up ahead of National Bourbon Week in June (June 14 - June 21).

With blooming scenery, comfortable weather, and a lively calendar of bourbon-themed and cultural events, spring offers an ideal balance of relaxation and activity in the "Bourbon Capital of the World."
