It’s almost time for the cherry blossoms to bloom in Washington, D.C. and in Japan.
The flowers have a limited engagement, but they are always a tourist extravaganza.
Hotels in Washington are traditionally sold out and run specials around seeing the cherry blossoms, which signal the upcoming spring season.
The peak time to see them in our nation’s capital is March 23-26, according to the National Park Service’s Bloom Watch, although various weather factors such as cooler temperatures and rain and wind can affect that.
It’s a tourist experience unlike any other, to see the monuments and the cherry blossoms all at once.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival will be held from March 20-April 14 in and around the iconic Tidal Basin in Washington.
For a truly once in a lifetime experience, hop a flight to the Far East. The cherry blossoms might have been a gift from Japan, but to actually see them in bloom there is remarkable.
In Japan, it is called Sakura.
Forecasters predict that in southern Japan, the peak will be March 27; in Tokyo, around March 29; and in the northern part of the country near Olympic host city Sapporo, it will be about May 4.
Or, because of the late blooms in the north of Japan, you could be adventurous and do both!
