Tourism officials in Quintana Roo are looking to invest 150 million pesos into improving the number of travelers visiting the region from the United States.

According to the Yucatan Times, Quintana Roo Secretary of Tourism Marisol Vanegas Perez said the number of American tourists to arrive in the area was down despite officials reporting a 3.3 percent increase in tourism activity.

Earlier in August, environmental officials started placing barriers in the water along Mexico's Caribbean coast to combat the spread of sargassum to the most popular beaches, which are once again open to tourists.

Some of the blame for the decrease in arrivals is also due to a decline in U.S. tourism, but officials in key destinations like Cancun are working to ensure the beaches are clean and the areas around the popular resorts are safe from violence.

To ensure the summer season finishes strong, more than 45,000 travel agents are working with government officials through caravans, seminars, and shows to entice tourists to Quintana Roo.

While Vanegas Perez is concerned about the decrease in American visitors, she said the "summer season has been one of the best in the last 10 years," according to the Yucatan Times.
