As Spring Break approaches, Miami
Beach has launched a campaign to better control the massive crowds that
flock to the city each year.
In an effort to “Break Up” with the violence
and disruptive behavior that have become associated with Spring Break in the
Florida town, city officials are implementing monthlong security measures, including
curfews, parking restrictions and early beach closures.
Police will also be out in force, using their presence to
quell the massive Spring
Break crowds, as well as adding DUI checkpoints, bag searches at the beach
and stepping up arrests for drug possession and violence.
The city posted a video saying it was breaking up with Spring
Breakers:
Miami Beach Mayor Steven Meiner revealed that many of the
measures have been used in the past as reactionary protocols, but city officials
are implementing them ahead of time to deter travelers from misbehaving before
they even arrive.
“The status quo and what we’ve seen in the last few years is
just not acceptable, not tolerable,” Meiner told The
Associated Press.
The Miami Beach Mayor also believes that most of the violent
mobs that cause the issues during Spring Break are not in town to support
business. He said the most disruptive visitors are not “staying in the hotels,
they’re not visiting our businesses.”
While some business owners are concerned about the financial
impact of the strict rules, most locals and travelers planning a visit to the Florida
city support the measure, saying the restrictions will bring back the peaceful atmosphere
most enjoy during the rest of the year.
