The Government of Quintana Roo is replacing the National Fund for Tourism Development (Fonatur) with the Trust for the Strengthening of Tourism Activity in Quintana Roo (Foatqroo), a trust that will be responsible for maintaining and operating the Cancun Hotel Zone and the Cozumel Marina.

The new announcement was made July 16, according to Riviera Maya News.  Foatqroo currently has a budget of 155.7 million Mexican pesos, the equivalent of US$8.7 million, which comes from Fonatur’s annual budget.

Foatqroo will be managed by the state’s Secretariat of Planning and Finance, though a technical committee will be the highest decision-making force, composed of experts and locals in both public and private sectors.

Fonatur left several projects unfinished, which Foatqroo will now manage, including Cozumel’s Comprehensive Tourism Project (PTO), modernization of the El Rey wastewater treatment plant, the rehabilitation of Playa Pez Volador and more.

“It is necessary to establish a public trust to strengthen tourism activity in the state, which will serve as a vehicle for the administration of the assets and a source of payment for the funds deposited in the trust accounts,” the agreement reads (translated from the original Spanish by Riviera Maya News.

“This trust includes actions for the conservation, operation and maintenance of the infrastructure of public and urban services, storm drainage, sanitation and treatment of wastewater, as well as any other activity related to the operation of the State’s tourism projects.”
