This February is an extra romantic month because, on top of Valentine’s Day, we also have Leap Day this year. According to Irish tradition, it’s a day on which women are allowed to propose to men. Okay, maybe in modern-day society, we don’t always adhere to the conventional rules of getting engaged anyway, but the notion of reversing roles is still very sweet.
2024 is also said to be the year of “set-jetting”, the new term for traveling to experience filming locations from one’s favorite movies or TV series. Envisioning that plenty of couples will want to take the trend to a new level, Icelandair has compiled a list of the most popular film-inspired proposal locations around the globe for those wishing to give their engagement moment a cinematic touch.
According to its report, 80 million travelers worldwide select their vacation destinations based on films each year. We’ve highlighted a few of the top contenders as identified by Iceland’s flagship airline, along with the popular movie proposal scenes they’re associated with
Griffith Park
With over 511,000 Instagram posts, Griffith Park steals the spotlight, renowned for the emotional proposal between Edward Cullen and Bella Swan in “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”. Renowned for its stunning architecture and intimate corners, it's the ideal backdrop for couples seeking an intimate, yet cinematic setting for the moment someone gets down on one knee.
According to Local Lens, Griffith Park is one of Los Angeles’ most romantic spots. It wrote, “Overlooking the sprawl of greater LA, the Griffith Observatory is a top destination in Los Angeles for proposals, especially at sunset. The Observatory building, grounds, and telescopes are always free, so it is a great idea for free places to propose in LA. The best time to propose at Griffith Park is at the golden hour and sunset, when the lights of the city start to light up.”
Pasadena
Featured in "The Time Traveler’s Wife" and boasting 132,000 Instagram posts, Pasadena, California took second spot as a leading destination for proposals. The charming enclave of Los Angeles has a small-town, old-timey feel to it that makes it an ideal location for couples looking for an alternative to the hustle and bustle of the larger metropolitan area. Pasadena has some absolutely beautiful spots to get down on one knee, including the Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical Gardens, which boasts a glorious 120 acres of amazing gardens.
Baltimore
Baltimore, Maryland, showcased in the movie “He’s Just Not That Into You” snagged third spot with 119,000 Instagram posts. The East Coast locale combines spectacular waterfront views with an abundance of cozy hideaways, offering a diverse set of charmingly intimate spots for popping the question.
