Connecticut is filled with a ton of fun activities for travelers of all ages.

From the famous Mystic Seaport and Aquarium to the Lake Compounce amusement park and its many beaches, there's something for everyone.

There is an art trail passport for the art lovers, with 18 museums and historic sites on the list. The adventurous type can plan travels around its many state and local fairs during the summer or enjoy the unpredictable New England snow trails and ice fishing in the winter.

We asked some travel agents to give us additional recommendations for a trip to the Constitution State:

Essex Steam Train and Riverboat

"Take a ride to the quaint town of Essex and see historic steam trains, still in operation," said Katey Varanelli, travel agent with MickeyTravels, LLC.

"After checking out the trains on the tracks (and leaving time for pictures!), board your steam train and enjoy the scenic ride through the Connecticut River Valley to Deep River Landing, where you transfer to the Becky Thatcher riverboat for a cruise along the Connecticut River."

Varanelli added that travelers will see Gillette Castle State Park in the distance, along with other Connecticut sites and wildlife: "For even more fun, check out special seasonal events, including Fall Foliage excursions, the North Pole Express and the Santa Special. Young or old, everyone in your family is sure to love your day in Essex."

For an end to a perfect Connecticut day, Varanelli suggests travelers stop by neighboring Chester on the way home for ice cream, dinner or shopping in this picturesque walking town.

Kent Falls

Varanelli also recommends visiting the town of Kent and Kent Falls State Park: "Pack a picnic and take the scenic drive to Kent and the park, where you'll find a series of spectacular waterfalls. Inside the park grounds, there are picnic areas, full restroom facilities, pedestal grills and everything you need for a day away from reality."

Swimming is not allowed, but Varanelli said that travelers can feel the mist at the base of the falls.

"The only cost associated with a day at Kent Falls is the parking fee, which varies by season, making it a great value for a day trip," she said. "Visit the town of Kent and stop by Kent Coffee and Chocolates for delicious drinks and homemade chocolates and candies."

Wine Time

Laney Sachs is a Connecticut-based travel consultant who specializes in Italy, so wineries are a favorite day trip.

"Explore the Connecticut Wine Trail," she said. "Although Connecticut is a small state, there are 34 wineries spread throughout and visiting a few of them is a terrific day trip."

The Passport to Connecticut Wineries allows customers to get a special passport stamped at the wineries they visit with an opportunity to win all types of prizes, including a two-week trip to Spain.

"A beautiful setting with a glass of wine in hand is a glorious way to spend a day," said Sachs.

Thimble Islands

According to Karen Quinn Panzer, Dream Vacations Franchise Owner and Vacation Specialist in Milford, Connecticut, there are 25 inhabited islands in the Long Island Sound where you can discover local lore, history (i.e. hurricanes, pirate tales, Native American history) and the price tags on million-dollar properties.

"Follow with a visit to the Thimble Islands Brewery and Stony Creek Brewery - perfectly located on the marina in Branford, Connecticut," she said. "Follow the Connecticut Wine Trail in Litchfield County and to Jonathan Edwards Winery in Stonington, on your way to Mohegan Sun Casino, for a fun day of wine tasting and gaming."
