Despite recent economic challenges, the Hotel and Tourism
Association of the Dominican
Republic (ASONAHORES) revealed that travel drove the country's economic
growth in 2023.
According to ASONAHORES data, the tourism industry was the
most dynamic part of the Dominican Republic’s economy, experiencing a 10.7
percent growth from the previous year and contributing $9.7 billion to the
Gross Domestic Product (GDP).
ASONAHORES President David Llibre unveiled tourism’s impact
on the country during the 24th annual Marketing of Dominican Tourism Products
Fair (DATE), saying that average daily spending for international tourists grew
from $130 to $153 in 2023.
“These figures, have an impact, not only on tourism projects
and on the different actors in the sector, but also on an entire society that
directly and indirectly benefits from the productive chain generated by the
sector,” Llibre said during DATE.
Llibre also announced a record in foreign direct investment
with $1.82 billion, an increase of 12 percent, and a representation of 27
percent of total foreign direct investment registered by the Central Bank of
the Dominican
Republic.
In addition, Llibre cited the expanded relationship between
ASONAHORES and the Ministry of Tourism, the impact of DATE and the commitment
from the Civil Aviation Board to further several major tourism projects.
