The U.S. State Department has raised its travel advisory level for Saint Lucia, encouraging visitors to exercise increased caution on the Caribbean island due to crime this summer.
Previously at Level 1, the Level 2 travel advisory was published on Friday, three days after officials offered similar guidance for the Turks and Caicos Islands.
"Violent crime can occur anywhere in Saint Lucia. U.S. citizens and other foreigners in Saint Lucia have been victims of armed robbery, assault, burglary, and rape," the July 10 update states.
"In some cases, U.S. citizens have been killed," the State Department adds.
According to the latest guidance, "guests at tourist resorts have been victims of violent crimes" and "police response times are not as fast as in the United States."
The State Department also warns that "petty crime is common, especially in popular tourist locations." Travelers are encouraged to always be aware of their surroundings.
"Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching and pickpocketing," the update adds.
"Tourists should beware of overcharging and scams in tourist areas. You may encounter aggressive vendors. Most sites have tourist police available to help in uncomfortable situations."
The Level 2 travel advisory also encourages visitors to be mindful of hurricanes heading into peak season.
