The United States Department of State has issued an updated
travel advisory for the Turks and Caicos Islands, a popular Caribbean vacation
destination.
According to the State Department’s official website, Turks and Caicos remains under the
previously issued Level 2 distinction, which advises American travelers to
“exercise increased caution” when visiting the islands.
The advisory was updated with new information pertaining to
firearms and ammunition, as the State Department is warning U.S. tourists to
“carefully check their luggage for stray ammunition or forgotten weapons before
departing.”
Turks and Caicos boasts strict gun and ammunition laws since
it is a British Overseas Territory, which has led to several American travelers
being detained by police and unable to leave the island for weeks.
In addition, the State Department updated its advisory with
changes to the “Crime” section, including a warning that most crime occurs in
Providenciales, a popular area for tourists visiting the islands, according to NBCChicago.com.
As part of the advisory, State Department officials issued
the following warnings:
- There have been reports of sexual assaults in the Turks and
Caicos Islands.
- Petty crime is common, especially in popular tourist
locations. Stay aware of your surroundings.
- Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity,
like purse snatching and pickpocketing.
- Tourists should beware of overcharging and scams in tourist
areas. You may encounter aggressive vendors. Some will offer “free” gifts that
lead to money demands. Most sites have tourist police available to help in
uncomfortable situations.
- The U.S. Embassy in Nassau, The Bahamas, helps U.S. citizens
who are victims of crime in the Turks and Caicos Islands.
