Normally, you don’t see Western European
nations on a list of travel alerts issued by the State Department of the United
States. But these aren’t normal times.
Just in the last month, England, Italy and
now Denmark have joined the list. And they all
have one thing in common: A threat of terrorism.
The U.S. State Department issues travel
alerts and advisories ranging from “Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions” up to
“Level 4: Do Not Travel.” In this instance, these European nations are at
“Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution.”
The State Department is not advising against travel to England, Italy or Denmark, just to be more vigilant.
“Terrorists may attack with little or no
warning, targeting tourist locations, transportation hubs, markets/shopping
malls, local government facilities, hotels, clubs, restaurants, places of
worship, parks, major sporting and cultural events, educational institutions,
airports, and other public areas,” the warning said.
Indeed, earlier this week, Israel upped
the ante in its war in Gaza against Hezbollah by setting off impromptu
explosions of devices such as cell phones and pagers. One of the attacks even
took place in a market.
Tourists are advised to be aware of their
surroundings at all times.
Other countries that have also received a Level 2 advisory include Lesotho, Sri Lanka, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and Tanzania. Mexico also received several alerts and advisories.
