Pot enthusiasts, get ready to head north. Alaska could be the next big destination for marijuana-inspired tourism says Julia Wright in an article for Civilized.
"For those who prefer more off-the-beaten-track travel with top-notch cannabis, and minimal restrictions on possession and consumption, you might want to pack your parka and plan ahead for a trip to Alaska," writes Wright.
The state approved legal consumption of cannabis in 2014, but approved retailers are still working to get the approval to open - however, they are on the verge.
"Some, like Juneau Cannabis Tours, are poised to begin operations," says the article. "When permitted, the Juneau-based firm will offer an "informative, eye opening, grin-inducing tour" of Southeast Alaska's cultivation facilities, retail stores, and manufacturing facilities hosted by their team of "cannabis aficionados."
However, a lot of regulation is still up in the air and there are no guarantees or even a firm timeline for when retailers will be able to be up and running.
"The degree to which cannabis tourism could boost the state's already-lucrative tourism industry, which attracts two million visitors per year, depends on how the industry is regulated, and when retailers will be permitted to open - a timeline which, for now at least, remains hazy," notes Wright.
