Winter Weather Slams Chicago, Flights Cancelled

Halloween brought wintry weather and 65 mph wind gusts to Chicago's Lake Michigan waterfront, causing 23-foot waves to flood the area.

Lake Shore Drive, a three-lane highway and main thoroughfare, saw vehicles pounded by water, resulting in lane closures and heavy traffic. Navy Pier, an arts and entertainment complex considered a top Chicago tourist attraction, closed its eastern end. Their haunted house barge was also closed after it began taking on water.

The Weather Channel cites a particularly rapid change in air pressure as the cause of the high winds, which also canceled over 300 flights at Chicago O'Hare Airport as of 12 p.m. EST. Other area airports have continued normal operations.
