Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group and Walt Disney Parks and Resorts are working together to develop a new show about Disney's heritage of animation and storytelling.
The production is to be hosted at Disney Springs in Orlando, though a start date has not been released.
The show "will celebrate Disney's legacy of storytelling in Cirque du Soleil's signature way, with a tribute to the one-of-a-kind craftsmanship that makes Disney so extraordinary," the companies said in a statement.
The two entertainment giants first teamed up in 1998 to develop La Nouba, a contemporary circus show featuring acrobats, gymnasts and other performers that has been holding performances at Disney Springs for two decades.
Cirque du Soleil, a Canadian company, started with just 20 street performers in 1984 and has grown to be one of the largest theatrical producers in the world. Previous offerings by the company have been based on pop culture influences such as The Beatles and Michael Jackson.
"We are incredibly inspired by Disney's immense creative universe," Daniel Lamarre, president and CEO of Cirque du Soleil Entertainment Group, said in a statement. "We are convinced that bringing Disney's magic to life on stage will touch audiences and bring them back to their childhood."
A title for the new show also has not been revealed. The Orlando Sentinel reported that both Disney and Cirque du Soleil executives have been tight-lipped about the details since the closing of La Nouba was announced in March.
La Nouba, which staged nearly 9,000 shows and hosted 11 million guests at Walt Disney World in Orlando, will end its run on December 31.
Disney said continued teaming with Cirque du Soleil was a logical step given the popularity of La Nouba.
"This long-standing relationship is built on mutual esteem and the success achieved by our two creative businesses throughout the past two decades with La Nouba," Tiffany Rende, senior vice president of corporate alliances and operating participants for The Walt Disney Corporation, said in a statement. "We look forward to our continued collaboration with Cirque du Soleil in developing this new show that will honor Disney animation's rich history.
