There was a time when the most iconic thing about Las Vegas, besides the gambling, of course, were the showgirls.
Heck, they even made a movie about them. Not a very good one, mind you, but that’s a story for another time, and probably another website.
But as Las Vegas began to evolve and the residency became more of a thing thanks to stars like Celine Dion, Britney Spears and Lady Gaga, among other high-profile names, the production revues began to dissipate. And so did the showgirl.
But they are coming back.
Now, actress and performer Dita Von Teese, who was once linked romantically with androgynous singer Marilyn Manson, will bring back a production show featuring showgirls and named "Dita Las Vegas: A Jubilant Revue," starting October 5 at the Horseshoe Hotel and Casino.
Whether it catches on and spawns a revival of feather headdresses and skimpy costumes remains to be seen.
The show pays homage to "Jubilee," the last remaining major production show in Las Vegas, which closed in 2016.
"It's been my dream to create a show that honors the great American art forms of burlesque and the showgirl," said Von Teese in a statement. "After many tours across Europe, Australia, the U.S., and Canada, to secure a home in Las Vegas -- the showbiz capital of the world -- and with the vaunted 'Jubilee' legacy, well, I couldn't be more ecstatic. I visited the show many times before it went dark, never getting enough of the spectacle of feathers and rhinestones."
She said she hopes to create her own legacy with the show.
