Festival of Lights Zagreb is one of the first annual events announced by the Zagreb Tourist Board to welcome the arrival of spring and warm weather to invite us to enjoy the outdoors and celebrate light and life. The Festival is a mix of design, architecture and entertainment and allows one to see the world from a new perspective through the joy of light. Once again, Zagreb welcomes visitors to another spectacular celebration of light from March 16 to 20, 2022.
Light follows dark, and spring follows winter - that is how it has always been. Everything awakens with the arrival of spring and sunlight, and our recharged batteries from our winter rest make everything possible. To celebrate our past, when ancestors had traditions and rituals celebrating spring's arrival, the Festival organizers combined imagination, art, and technology into the Festival of Lights Zagreb year. Times may have changed, but the joy people feel when light fills their lives is timeless.
Zagreb is a city designed to be enjoyed outdoors, and it is during spring when the days are longer, and all activities move outdoors. Citizens of Zagreb welcome another long-awaited season of social activities, whether it is hanging out or enjoying countless cups of coffee with friends, along with the cafes of the city squares and streets. That beginning starts with the Festival of Lights Zagreb.
This Festival will see Zagreb turns into a spectacular light show, as streets, squares, parks, buildings, and landmarks become the focal point of innovative light installations. The familiar and well-known become new and exciting, thanks to artists whose visions will shed new light on Zagreb. Beams of light and many colors will bring new energy to the usually quiet and magnificent Upper Town, while the lively Lower Town will become more dazzling than ever. Yet, these light creations also leave a strong impression on today's demanding audience, not that easy to please.
Zagreb's first Festival of Lights took place in 2017. It was a four-day celebration that showcased attractive audiovisual installations and projections at seven different locations. After its successful year, the Festival continued in 2018 and 2019, attracting more and more visitors until it had to be postponed in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic.
This year the Festival of Lights Zagreb will be bigger and brighter than ever, reaching new areas of Zagreb. The streets will be brimming with live performances of musicians, artists, and dancers. Modern technology, stunning visual effects, and performing arts will be combined to create a unique experience for all generations during the Festival's five days. The city will be bathed in light when the sun fades, continuing its warm welcome to the new season. The Festival of Lights Zagreb paves the path to becoming a new tradition and the first herald of spring in Zagreb.
