As Canadian travel patterns continue to evolve, California finds itself in an unusual position. While some travellers are choosing to vacation elsewhere this year, others remain loyal to the Golden State's beaches, dining scene and laid-back coastal lifestyle.

There is little question that cross-border travel has become a more complicated conversation in 2026.

Political tensions and shifting consumer sentiment have led Canadians to reconsider trips south of the border, with some opting to spend their travel dollars closer to home. For many U.S. destinations, however, Canada remains an important market, and tourism operators continue to invest in attracting Canadian visitors.

TravelPulse Canada was in Southern California to attend the annual Wave Awards, as a guest of TravelAge West. Hotels, restaurants and attractions were eager to showcase the experiences that have long made the region a favourite among Canadian travellers.

In Santa Monica, oceanfront icon Shutters on the Beach continues to attract visitors seeking a classic California beach experience. Just steps from the shore, the property offers access to the city's walkable waterfront, shopping districts and restaurants.

Dining remains one of the destination's selling points. At Terrazza, located next door at Casa Del Mar, attentive service and coastal-inspired cuisine reflect a relaxed sophistication that defines much of Southern California's culinary scene.

Family-friendly attractions, walkable waterfronts and outdoor experiences make the region particularly well-suited to multi-generational travel, whether visitors are travelling with young children, teens or grandparents.

Further south, Marina del Rey offers a quiet coastal experience centred around the largest man-made recreational marina in North America. Visitors can stroll the waterfront, enjoy a coffee from local favourite Alfred Coffee and watch sea lions bask along the docks.

Accommodations like The Ritz-Carlton, Marina del Rey cater to travellers seeking a luxury waterfront escape, and food continues to play an important role in the visitor experience. Breakfast at Cafe Cache and a waterfront dinner at Beachside Restaurant at Jamaica Bay Inn highlighted the area's diverse dining options.

But, not all of Southern California's hospitality came from hotel staff.

Santa Monica's resident ground squirrels seemed determined to make visitors feel welcome, too. Canadians may have a global reputation for friendliness, but our squirrels apparently missed the memo.

The furry locals appeared more than happy to mingle with tourists along the oceanfront bluffs. As it turned out, they were making news the very same day. Santa Monica officials had recently launched a campaign asking visitors not to feed the squirrels, whose growing population has become increasingly reliant on human snacks.

Judging by their confidence around people, the message is still a work in progress.

A rental car booked through Turo made it easy to explore beyond the coast. Los Angeles' most recognizable attractions draw visitors from around the world, and having a vehicle provides convenient access to landmarks such as the Hollywood Sign and the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Visitors planning to hike to the sign should be prepared for a lengthy trek, paid parking and warm temperatures, particularly during the summer months.

Back in Santa Monica, the city's iconic pier remains a must-see attraction.

Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., located directly on the pier, combines ocean views and seafood specialties with movie-themed trivia inspired by the Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump. The restaurant pays tribute to the movie, which famously saw Forrest end his cross-country run at the Santa Monica Pier before deciding to "turn around and keep going."

For clients considering a return to the U.S., Southern California continues to make a compelling case. While some Canadians may be looking elsewhere this year, the beaches, dining, attractions and warm welcome that have long defined the region remain very much intact.
