As the 2024 fall
travel season approaches, a high proportion of travelers are experiencing
heightened anxiety about their upcoming trips. This uptick in worry is assumed
to be due to a combination of factors, including the anticipation of flu
season, frequent airline disruptions and a record-breaking hurricane season.
A recent survey by
leading travel insurance marketplace Squaremouth.com reveals that a whopping 75
percent of respondents are more concerned about protecting their trip costs
this autumn in comparison with years past. Through its research, Squaremouth
has identified three primary concerns among travelers as we transition from a
costly summer travel period into what promises to be a challenging fall season.
1. Getting Sick
or Injured Amid Travel
The number one
concern, cited by 64 percent of travelers, is the fear of getting sick or
injured while away from home. Many travelers are worried about the lack of
international coverage in their primary health insurance plans, which can lead
to significant out-of-pocket expenses if they require medical treatment abroad.
Squaremouth advises
travelers to consider purchasing a plan with at least $50,000 in Emergency
Medical coverage and $100,000 in Medical Evacuation coverage. Higher coverage
amounts may be prudent for those whose itineraries include remote destinations
or adventurous activities.
2. Having To Cancel a
Trip
Another major
concern, reported by 16 percent of travelers, is the possibility of having to
cancel their trip before departure. With the average cost of fall trips this
year soaring 36 percent to $8,056, travelers are justifiably anxious about
safeguarding their expensive trip investments.
Squaremouth’s advice is to purchase a travel insurance policy that includes trip cancellation
coverage, which will protect you against unforeseen circumstances, like medical
emergencies or inclement weather. This benefit can reimburse policyholders up
to 100 percent of their prepaid, non-refundable trip costs if they find
themselves forced to cancel due to unexpected problems. Comprehensive policies
often also include Trip Interruption and, for maximum protection, travelers can
also add Cancel for Any Reason coverage at an additional cost.

3. Travel
Delays and Missed Connections
The third major
concern, affecting 10 percent of travelers, relates to air travel delays,
missed flights and lost luggage. While there's no foolproof way to prevent
these issues, travel insurance can provide financial protection and make any
actual delays more manageable.
Squaremouth points
out that Travel Delay coverage can cover the costs of meals, hotel stays and more
if their flight is delayed by at least three to 12 hours. Some policies may
also cover any additional expenses needed to catch up to the policyholder’s
destination. The company recommends selecting a policy that has the shortest
duration of delay required for coverage to kick in.
With travel
proving increasingly complex, especially in the face of unpredictable weather
and potential health risks, securing comprehensive travel insurance is becoming
more crucial than ever. Travelers are urged to carefully consider their
coverage options to enjoy the most peace of mind possible during the upcoming
fall travel season.
