Soon, Mexico's considerable portfolio of luxury properties will become richer still, thanks to a partnership between Kerzner International and real estate investor BK Partners, who have entered into an agreement to develop two One&Only resorts on the country's Pacific Coast.
The two resorts will join the highly regarded One&Only Palmilla in Los Cabos, which has been closed in the aftermath of Hurricane Odile and is scheduled to reopen on April 20.
While opening dates for the resorts were unavailable, a Kerzner spokesman said construction on One&Only Mandarina in Riviera Nayarit is expected to begin at the end of this year. Construction on One&Only Santa Maria de Xala, which will be located about 60 miles south of Puerto Vallarta's airport, is scheduled to begin next year.
"I am looking forward to introducing both of these resorts to our loyal One&Only guests and new guests alike," said Alan Leibman, CEO of Kerzner International, which is probably best known for its flagship Atlantis brand but also manages nine One&Only resorts around the globe with three more in development. "The locations truly showcase the best Mexico has to offer, each with a distinctive experience, and I am very confident that One&Only will continue to define ultra-luxury in the region."
One&Only Mandarina's 145 villas will be nestled in a rainforest, with accommodations ranging from ocean cliff villas, tree house villas and mountain villas. The resort's pool area, which will offer sweeping Pacific views, will be equipped with private cabanas and a café and lounge.
A beach club will be situated right by the water, as will a family pool. The resort will also house an eclectic array of restaurants focusing on both local and international cuisines, boutiques, a spa, fitness center and conference center.
One&Only Santa Maria de Xala, which will be part of a new 2,965-acre development, is being billed as an "authentic hacienda resort." Set on five miles of beach, it will include a total of 75 villas. Its collection of restaurants will place an emphasis on regional dishes. Like its sister, it will also feature a spa and fitness center.
Both properties will feature programs for families and kids as well as adults-only areas.
