Oasis at Gold Spike opened on Oct. 21 in Downtown Las Vegas, becoming the first hotel created through Downtown Project, an effort to revitalize the downtown area led by Zappos.com CEO Tony Hsieh.
The boutique hotel-complete with 38 rooms and six suites-not only includes many elements fit for a boutique property, but it also features amenities and services designed to promote Downtown Vegas, as well as the entrepreneurial spirit Downtown Project celebrates.
In terms of the rooms, each room and suite-or "Crash Pad"-has a different design element. While traditional hotels have two to three schemes that are consistent throughout the whole building, each of the rooms at Oasis at Gold Spike has different furniture, décor, artwork and so on, said Michael Stoll, operations manager, Downtown Project.
"So, ideally, you could come and stay 44 different times and have 44 different experiences," Stoll said.
The pool atmosphere at Oasis is also a highlight (complete with poolside cocktail service), as well as the lounge area, the live music and the access to the adjacent Gold Spike. Gold Spike features a 24/7 grill, Backyard at Gold Spike (where guests can play games such as Jenga and Cornhole) and the Carnival Bar, a quirky bar with a funhouse theme.
But what really has people talking, Stoll said, is Oasis at Gold Spike's library (which sports a collection of books celebrating entrepreneurship) and record players and vinyl collection (in the lounge and in the suites).
Beyond that, Oasis provides bicycle rentals, which is not only a neat service to offer guests, but is also a good way to encourage visitors to explore Downtown Vegas.
"It's a fun way to explore the neighborhood," said Kim Schaefer, corporate communications, Downtown Project. "Part of what makes Oasis interesting is it's located in the epicenter of the revitalization that's going on downtown. So we thought it would be a fun way for people who are staying with us to explore."
Schaefer, a longtime Las Vegas resident who has been a part of Downtown Project since its beginnings, said Oasis will help support Downtown Project's mission to revitalize the downtown area.
"Our investment strategy is really tied to creating collision points for people within the neighborhood," Schaefer said. "We really think this is an opportunity to bring people in to stay with us and to have them interact with the neighborhood itself and really develop a sense of connection."
She added, "It's just another opportunity to welcome people in to experience what's happening downtown and we hope that-in addition to people who are traveling here-people who live in Las Vegas will spend a night or two with us and really immerse themselves in all that's happening in Downtown Vegas."
Schaefer said Downtown Project has already created 923 jobs since its inception three years ago.
"I've lived here in Las Vegas for 20 years, and I've been a part of Downtown Project since the beginning," Schaefer said. "So it's been very gratifying on a personal level to see all that's happened in such a short period of time. It's hard to imagine what a year or two years will look like. We really feel like we're on track to grow the engagement, to grow the foot traffic in the neighborhood and to drive new investment and new businesses into the neighborhood, as well. I'm monumentally excited about what comes next."
