Italy's Borgo Egnazia has been named luxury travel network Virtuoso's Hotel of the Year for 2016.

The five-star resort overlooking the Adriatic Sea was recognized as the best of the best by Virtuoso's 390-plus agencies and more than 11,400 travel advisors, who also selected winners across a host of other categories, including best bar and best spa.

The annual Best of the Best award winners represent the cream of the crop among Virtuoso Hotels & Resorts' nearly 1,200 properties around the globe.

U.S.-based winners included Miami Beach's Faena Hotel for Best Achievement in Design, California's Farmhouse Inn for Best Culinary Experience and the Big Apple's New York EDITION for Best Bar, which boasts a slew of unique cocktails like the espresso martini.

Meanwhile, the title of Best Family Program went to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico's Rosewood Hotel. Valerie Wilson Travel's Kimberly Wilson Wetty singled out the five-star hotel's painting lessons as one of the unique ways the property incorporates culture.

In addition to the Borgo Egnazia, the lakefront Grand Hotel Tremezzo also earned Italy some coveted recognition in 2016, taking home top honors for Best Spa.

South America's lone award came from Brazil's Belmond Hotel das Cataratas, which boasts 2016's Most Innovative Guest Experience, according to Virtuoso's agencies and advisors.

Other award winners included Jose Silva of Paris' Four Seasons Hotel George V, who was awarded Hotelier of the Year, South Africa's andBeyond Phinda Private Game Reserve for the Sustainable Tourism Leadership category and Rome's Hotel Eden Rome, which was named the One to Watch.

"Naming any hotel as the Best of the Best from among the world's finest properties in our renowned Hotels & Resorts program is always a challenge," said Virtuoso's senior vice president of Global Product Partnerships Albert Herrera said in a statement. "This year's winners surpassed our expectations and the exacting standards we - and more importantly, our clients - demand from our partner hotels."
