Snow, ice, bone-chilling temperatures and grey skies in many places across the U.S. are just a few of the things that make Phoenix/Scottsdale one of the most popular destinations in winter.
With more than 300 days of sun a year, 200 golf courses, the most resort spas per capita in the country and a thriving culinary scene, the Valley of the Sun is a slam-dunk for clients seeking sun and fun.
Even better, perennial hotel favorites are upping their game in time for your early 2018 radar.
The Phoenician
The Grand Dame of luxury in the city, the 645-room Phoenician and its boutique hotel-within-hotel, Canyon Suites-with both a Forbes Five Star and AAA Five Diamond rating-is in the midst of a three-year, multi-million dollar renovation. The guestrooms and suites of both were remodeled in late 2016, and many new public spaces debuted during fall 2017.
The three-tiered pool complex got a new look with a new mid-level pool area featuring family-friendly, reserved seating on one end and reserved cabanas in an adults-only area on the other. The pools debuted a Kid Zone in December, adding a waterslide and tree house to an existing splash pad.
My favorite addition this fall was the opening of Mowry & Cotton.
The Modern American eatery, featuring some outstanding vegetarian dishes, turned the former Italian restaurant's dark traditional space upside down, replacing the décor with floor to ceiling windows, contemporary furniture and a huge patio space overlooking the pool. It is one of the best restaurant openings in the city this year and also just began a popular weekend brunch.
The Thirsty Camel lounge bar also changed its look, with floor-to-ceiling windows that afford sweeping views of the property. The Afternoon Tea Parlor got a facelift as well, giving it a more intimate feel.
This month, the Shops at Phoenician debut a new look and new outlets.
Early 2018 will bring one of the most anticipated renovations: A brand new, three-story spa featuring a rooftop pool, 24 treatment rooms, a DryBar outlet and revamped treatment menu.
In April, fitness fans will revel in a new two-story fitness center offering hundreds of virtual, on-demand exercise classes, seven tennis courts, two pickleball courts and one basketball court. During late 2018, the golf course will also be restructured from 27 holes to 18.
Speaking of food, no stay is complete without enjoying T Cook's. Often voted the best date night restaurant in the Valley, I love eating on the patio with its great views of the hotel's stunning grounds and iconic Camelback Mountain.
With so many resorts in the city, competition is fierce and, come 2019, it will get even more competitive in the luxury space with the opening of a new Ritz Carlton in tony Paradise Valley.
