Travelers heading home Monday after an extended Thanksgiving weekend should avoid LaGuardia and Newark airports.
According to CBS Local, the Port Authority of New York & New Jersey is advising travelers to allow extra time due to increased traffic inside and outside of the facilities. Officials said access roads surrounding LaGuardia and Newark airports were packed with traffic, resulting in longer waits to even get to the airports.
The Port Authority said traffic was so congested on the roads leading to the facilities that many travelers abandoned their rides and walked down the highway in order to get to the airport in time to make their flights.
In addition to the 2.6 million people the Transportation Security Administration estimated would go through airport screening during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, a multi-billion-dollar construction project outside LaGuardia also added to the issues.

Traffic reporters at Fox New York told travelers to allow at least three hours to drive to the airport and at least another two hours or more once they arrive to get through security.
Though officials typically advise people to use public transportation in order to avoid congestion associated with the construction project and post-holiday travel surge, city buses are dealing with the same traffic.
