The Hawai’i Tourism Authority has issued an update on Kaua’i’s status, encouraging travelers to be respectful and follow local rules as recovery continues on the island.
As of this week, much of the island’s electricity has been restored—a major achievement, since 90% of the island had lost power, and 80% of those who’d lost power had it restored within a week.
Recovery is still ongoing: while some accommodations have reopened to welcome guests, the HTA encourages travelers to “avoid restricted or heavily impacted areas, follow all county and emergency instructions, treat every dark traffic light as a four-way stop and expect evolving conditions. Supporting nearby restaurants, shops and activities that are able to operate can make a meaningful difference for the families and businesses navigating this recovery period.”
Those with upcoming plans to Kauaʻi should check with their accommodations directly to confirm whether they can stay there and what amenities are available post-hurricane. They should also confirm with any tour operators whether their planned activities will still run.
“As the residents of Kauaʻi have long shared their aloha with visitors, we kindly ask that visitors embrace this same spirit — showing understanding, patience and respect for the process Kauaʻi’s communities are going through,” said the HTA. “Mahalo for your patience, understanding and aloha during this recovery period.”
Last week, the HTA encouraged those with close-term travel plans to consider rebooking to a different location outside Kauaʻi, as many resorts remained shuttered and power and road repairs were still ongoing. Several resorts last week said they hoped to reopen within two weeks, and many are planning to return to operations in September.
Ko’a Kea Resort in Poipu told guests that they can begin arriving at the resort on Wednesday, September 16. The Sheraton Kaua’i Coconut Beach Resort remains closed and is waiving cancellation fees through September 25.
