According to the U.S. Travel Association, Memorial Day weekend will mark the beginning of a record-breaking summer travel season. AAA forecasts that almost 44 million travelers will travel this Memorial Day weekend, 90 percent of which will travel by car, up one million from four years ago.
AAA also found that the busiest times on the road for the coming weekend are Thursday between noon and 6 p.m. and Friday between noon and 7 p.m. local time.
Additionally, Peak traffic is anticipated between 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. on Saturday and between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Sunday.
Air travel is also expected to spike massively this Memorial Day weekend, with an estimated 8-10 percent increase in passenger volume, according to the TSA. This represents a 35 percent increase from pre-pandemic air travel volumes and the busiest Memorial Day weekend on record.
According to United Airlines' numbers, three million travelers are planned to fly between May 23 and 28, which is up five percent from the same period last year.
Booking data also revealed that the places of most interest for travel this upcoming Memorial Day weekend include Orlando, Las Vegas, Fort Lauderdale, Southern California, Miami, New York, Denver, and Boston.
In addition, travel prices have experienced less inflation than the overall economy, with TPI growth recently found to be lower than overall inflation.
