Selfie Stick Causes Roller Coaster Stoppage at Disney California Adventure

Selfie sticks have caused serious headaches in recent months, and a passenger wielding one of the devices forced park workers to shut down the California Screamin' roller coaster mid-ride at Disney California Adventure.

The incident took place at around noon on Wednesday, June 24, when workers saw one of the riders-who was not identified by park officials-on the roller coaster pull out the selfie stick as the train reached the top of the hill.

According to Joseph Pimentel of the Orange County Register, selfie sticks are not permitted on rides, and as soon as workers saw the passenger with the item, they shut down the attraction. The passengers were removed and the train of cars returned safely to the main station.

A Disney spokesperson said the ride was back up and running within an hour of the incident.

Disney amusement parks have been at the forefront of restrictions on selfie sticks due to the possibility of the items coming loose during a ride and striking other guests. The most recent ride closure comes just days after the park officially announced it would be banning selfie sticks completely for all of its parks-even internationally-by July 1, according to TravelPulse's Gabe Zaldivar.
