Two travel advisory updates issued by the United States’ Department of State in January have been seeing high levels of media attention as they are some of the most popular Caribbean destinations for American travelers to visit.
As we enter into the busy spring break travel season, we asked several travel experts to weigh in on the recent travel advisories, particularly for the Bahamas and Jamaica, and provide their knowledge to travelers concerned about recent headlines.
Marissa Waiters, Owner of Spread Your Wings Travel Agency, stresses the importance of the traveler in determining personal levels of travel safety and being responsible while traveling internationally.
“In my view, travel advisories are temporary measures that can influence decisions, but ultimately, the responsibility lies with the traveler to assess and decide whether to proceed with their plans,” said Waiters. “For instance, I had the opportunity to visit Jamaica just before the issuance of a travel advisory for the area. Despite the advisory, my trip was an incredible experience, underscoring the point that while it's important to consider these alerts, they should not deter us from exploring new destinations.”

“The key to a successful and enjoyable trip lies in prioritizing safety and maintaining vigilance at all times,” she continued. “Travelers should stay informed about their destinations, but also remember that many people visit these locations without incident by following local guidelines and exercising caution.”
Brittany Placek, travel advisor at Those Who Wander Travel, stresses the importance of having a travel advisor who can educate and advise travelers on the advisories, especially for new-to-international travelers.
“I have received numerous inquiries from clients regarding travel advisories, which is not uncommon, especially among new clients,” said Placek. “Many of my clients have concerns about the safety of traveling to other countries. As someone who travels internationally 10 or more times per year, often to multiple different countries, I find it helpful to share my personal experiences and emotions during my travels.”
“I also engage in conversations with my clients, comparing international travel to travel within the United States. Just as there are areas in the US where one would avoid being alone or late at night, the same applies worldwide,” she continued. “When I explain this to my clients, they often conclude that as long as they exercise common sense and avoid engaging in risky behaviors, they can avoid unsafe situations. Additionally, I reassure my clients by emphasizing that I exclusively work with reputable suppliers and properties that I personally trust for my own travels. This provides them with an added sense of security.”
Andrea Wright, Vice President of Luxury Sales for Outside Agents, also stresses how travel advisories are helpful guides to keep travelers informed about potential risks, but how Level 2 or Level 3 warnings shouldn’t necessarily deter travelers, as long as they remain vigilant and focus on personal safety.

“Whether you're an experienced traveler or planning your first major trip, traveling with confidence can make a big difference. A level 2 or 3 advisory warning should not deter your travel plans,” said Wright. “Instead, approach it with the same caution you would in a major city where situational awareness is paramount. It's all about knowing when to be aware and how to navigate your surroundings responsibly.”
“I live in Chicago, and there are many parts of the city that I avoid or take extreme caution, but it doesn't prevent me from going downtown,” Wright explained. “Don't let fear stop your travel plans, instead, use it to heighten your awareness. Stay in groups where security is ample, never wander alone after dark, and keep your wits about you (not too many rum punches) — simple protective measures! There is danger in any city, and if you are looking for it, you will find it.”
Brittany Placek stressed how utilizing a travel advisor can be a big boost for travelers’ confidence levels, especially for international travel.
“I firmly believe that utilizing a travel advisor is immensely beneficial for clients because ‘we know because we go,’” she explained. “This is a mantra frequently used by Those Who Wander Travel. I am able to provide my clients with specific details about my recent travels to destinations such as Jamaica, Europe, Mexico, the Dominican Republic, and more. By sharing these firsthand experiences, I can offer insights that may not be readily available through a simple Google search.”
“Remember, the essence of travel is achieved not by avoiding risks but responsibly managing them,” said Andrea Wright. “I have traveled all over the globe, by myself and with my three kids, we have gone to places like Egypt, and Africa, and Jamaica, all when there were significant travel advisories. I am not saying ignore them: I am saying be aware and make smart choices. Keep enjoying this great big world of ours—it's too beautiful to sit at home in fear!”
