Snow and frigid temperatures are still
impacting travel across the country as 2024 has gotten off to a bumpy start.
According to the Federal Aviation
Administration's National Airspace System Status report, as of 9:15 on Friday
morning, 14 airports were suffering significant delays, ranging from LaGuardia
Airport in New York to Cleveland to Las Vegas.
That includes three airports that were closed
entirely.
And it's not just snow in
the usual places like the Great Lakes region. The Pacific Northwest expects ice
and freezing rain that could impact air travel. On Thursday, An American
Airlines flight skidded off the runway in
Rochester, New York.
Thankfully, there were no
injuries.
According to the Weather Channel, it was
only 12 degrees in Cleveland and nine in northern Michigan on Friday morning.
The station also forecasted another foot of snow in the Buffalo area and
continued cold and below-normal temperatures for nearly 100 million Americans.
American Airlines is offering travel
waivers
to an array of states, mostly in the northeast, such as New York, Pennsylvania,
Ohio, and all the way to Washington, D.C.
United Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest, Delta
and others have also issued travel waivers. Air travel waivers are good as long
as you book from the same airport to the same destination as your original
ticket. However, they usually come with an expiration, so check with your
airline. United has even issued an alert regarding its Boeing 737 Max 9 planes,
which have been grounded.
According to the airline tracking service FlightAware, there have been
2,245 delays so far this morning and 1,256 cancellations on flights within,
coming into, or going out of the United States.
Amtrak said it is running modified service
due to the country's cold weather and snow.
