The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) has signed a new partnership with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which will strengthen cooperation towards a more sustainable and circular travel and tourism industry.
The Memorandum of Understanding will connect UNEP's global sustainability expertise with WTTC's travel and tourism companies, with a major goal of assisting businesses in aligning with sustainability standards.
WTTC members will be able to participate as volunteers in UNEP's flagship sustainability programs, particularly in food waste, plastics and the environment.
Key parts of the MoU include advancing circular economy solutions, promoting regenerative tourism, strengthening engagement towards water stewardship and other sustainability issues and following international best practices for the industry.
"Travel & Tourism is one of the world's most effective forces for sustainable development," said President & CEO of WTTC, Gloria Guevara. "Through this partnership with UNEP, we are bringing together global leadership, industry expertise and practical action to help businesses accelerate environmental action, reduce waste, protect biodiversity and create lasting positive impact for destinations and communities. Together, we can ensure that the growth of Travel & Tourism goes hand in hand with a planet that sustains great travel experiences."
The partnership runs through June 2028.
