Discovering Baja California Sur: Nature, History and Gastronomy

Baja California Sur's capital has established itself as a year-round destination for beach, adventure, culture and relaxation, paired with premium services and activities. Visitors stroll the scenic Malecón, relax on the pristine sands of Balandra Beach and swim with sea lions off Espíritu Santo Island, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Just offshore, travelers can access a sea cave inside Loreto Bay National Park, part of the UNESCO-protected Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California. Loreto's whale encounters rank among the most intimate in the world, with sightings that include the blue whale, the largest animal ever known to have lived on Earth.

Inland from Loreto, the dramatic volcanic range of the Sierra de la Giganta frames some of the region's best desert trekking. Along the protected shoreline, a string of hidden beaches reveals itself only to those willing to venture beyond the familiar, offering quiet stretches of sand where desert hills meet impossibly clear sea.

West of Loreto, Comondú is a nature lover's paradise, with whale watching in Magdalena Bay, some of Mexico's best fly fishing and close encounters with sea turtles and migrating birds. Nearby Mulegé offers 10,000-year-old cave paintings, bighorn sheep in their natural habitat and access to the El Vizcaíno Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest wildlife refuge in Mexico.

Forty minutes from La Paz, these twin towns rank among the world's best spots for windsurfing and kitesurfing thanks to strong seasonal winds between November and April. Year-round options include diving, snorkeling, sport fishing and trips to Cerralvo Island. A 19th-century mining boomtown, El Triunfo once ranked as the state's most populated community thanks to its gold and silver mines. La Paz's dining scene matches its natural scenery. Jazamango, a farm-to-table concept from chef Javier Plasencia, and DUM, which changes its menu with every new moon, lead a wave of destination restaurants. The Green Room serves a fresh, catch-of-the-day menu facing La Pastora Beach, while Oystera, from Sonoran chef Poncho Cadena, builds its menu around oysters, crustaceans and shellfish.
