Bowman’s Travel Brief: Overtourism Issues

Last week, it was reported that locals in Málaga, Spain posted unfriendly stickers around tourist buildings that included “stinks of tourists” and “go f—ing home."

This is not the first time locals have declared their frustrations toward tourists. Closer to home here in the United States, we’ve seen residents in Hawaii voice their displeasure about tourists impacting their home state.

Overtourism is back in a big way as more and more crowds take to the skies to travel the world again.

We have seen places like Venice and Amsterdam make big changes in the name of overtourism, and I fully expect other crowded cities to join them in the coming years.

It’s a tough battle though because while the locals in popular destinations have every right to be upset at massive crowds impacting their daily life, especially those tourists who are behaving badly, there are residents in these places who depend on tourism money to make a living.

Implementing higher fees for visitors is one way to fight overtourism, but higher costs doesn’t always prevent people from traveling.

Which makes me ponder…is overtourism a never-ending battle where nobody wins?
