Love them or hate them, but the hop-on, hop-off bus remains a packed commodity this summer travel season.

Is it the best way to see a city? No, definitely not.

But personally, I have a soft spot for these monstrous vehicles. Yes, I know they’re not the best for the environment, but every time I see one or take a ride on one, it takes me back to a place that reeled me into a love of travel.

My wife and I went to London, England for one of my first big international trips prior to working in the travel industry. The trip began in London and then ended in Dublin, Ireland for St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.

In London, we opted to give the hop-on, hop-off bus a go. We ended up creating some exceptional memories together while sitting on the top of the bus on a chilly day and taking in all the sights around us. Being a young broke married couple, it was of course the affordable price to experience many highlights of the city that grabbed our attention.

I look back at this England-Ireland trip as the one that really solidified my desire to change careers and work in the travel industry.

And no, I don’t owe it all to the hop-on, hop-off bus. That’s just one experience from the entire trip. The photos we got on the bus were just ok (cell phone cameras are better now).

However, every time I see those big red or blue or maroon busses when I’m in a big city, the nostalgia hits me.

We all have that one experience that helped propel our love of travel. For me, it’s the hop-on, hop-off bus.
