Bowman’s Travel Brief: To Airbnb or Not to Airbnb

This past weekend I stayed at an Airbnb for the first time since 2019.

It’s no secret a lot has happened in the travel industry space since that time (global pandemic triggers), and yet Airbnb still has a pretty similar reputation now as it did during my last experience.

This time it was my first Airbnb as a dad. We booked a last-minute spot in Hilton Head Island, South Carolina to stay in the same complex area as our neighbors. One of our neighbors own an Airbnb, so it was interesting to hear their perspective as hosts.

While the rental company has had its share of bad press, it has a lasting place in the travel industry.

They recently updated their cancellation policy so now guests can cancel reservations and receive refunds in cases of “foreseeable weather events” like hurricanes or other major impactful events that would prevent one from traveling.

They also recently set a ban to ensure no indoor security cameras are allowed by hosts.

How that wasn’t already a ban to begin with is a bit mind boggling, but I will admit I was much more proactive in searching for any cameras or listening devices this time than I had ever been before in an Airbnb.

Airbnb serves its purpose in the travel space though. Not working with travel advisors is something they should fix, however – especially in the luxury space. Travel advisors working on high-end only bookings might then consider Airbnb if it built out a super luxury only portfolio.
