When we talk about education in the travel industry, we
often focus on the skills needed to run a successful business — sales
strategies, marketing, technology, operations and strategic partnerships. While
those areas are critical, true professional growth goes beyond learning
workflows and systems. It’s about who you become along the journey.
That is the foundation of ASTA’s
Mentorship Program.
Mentorship is not just about helping someone become
successful. It is about developing leaders who will shape the future of our
industry.
Success Is Built Through Shared Experiences
Entrepreneurship can be an incredibly rewarding journey, but
it can also feel isolating. Many travel advisors build their businesses
independently, making important decisions around growth, challenges,
relationships and the future of their careers without a roadmap or someone who
has walked that path before.
That is where mentorship creates a meaningful impact.
When mentors share their lived experiences, mentees gain
more than business advice — they gain insight into how successful professionals
think, make decisions, overcome obstacles and continue evolving. They learn the
values, resilience and mindset that drive long-term success.
The greatest lessons are often not found in a textbook. They
come from conversations about challenges they have overcome, mistakes they have
made, lessons they have learned and the moments that have shaped someone's
career.
Creating Connections That Strengthen Our Industry
One of the most powerful outcomes of mentorship is the
opportunity to build bridges across our industry.
Travel advisors from different backgrounds, business models
and career stages come together to exchange ideas, expand their networks and
learn from one another. These relationships create a stronger, more connected
travel advisor community.
ASTA's role in this space is unique because we are the
industry's trade association, representing the entire travel advisor ecosystem.
Our mentorship program brings together diverse perspectives from every sector
of the industry while reinforcing the values that guide our profession —
integrity, ethics and maintaining the highest standards of service.
Developing Leaders, Not Just Businesses
A successful advisor is not defined only by sales numbers or
business growth. True success is also measured by leadership, reputation,
relationships and the ability to impact others positively.
That is what makes ASTA’s Mentorship Program different.
The program focuses on helping advisors grow professionally
while also preparing them to become future mentors, leaders and advocates for
the industry.
We have already seen this impact firsthand. Nine mentors
from previous cohorts returned this year to continue giving back, and we have
our first mentee who has completed the program and now returns as a mentor
herself — creating a cycle of knowledge-sharing and leadership development.
The greatest recognition is not the awards the program has
received, although those awards are meaningful. The greatest recognition is
seeing the impact mentors and mentees have on one another and watching those
relationships continue beyond the program.
A Program Built Around the Needs of Advisors
In terms of education, we learn a tremendous amount from the
advisors who participate in our programs. Their experiences, challenges and
feedback help us understand where the industry needs support and where we
should focus our educational efforts.
Mentorship gives us direct insight into the real-world
challenges advisors face as they grow their businesses and careers. Those
conversations help guide our future programming and ensure we continue creating
resources that are relevant, practical and impactful.
Expanding the Mentorship Experience
While the ASTA Mentorship Program continues to grow, we
recognize that a national program requires thoughtful expansion based on mentor
availability and program capacity.
This year, we took another step forward by introducing
mentor roundtables at the ASTA Travel Advisor Conference in San Diego. The
session brought together mentors and attendees for meaningful conversations
focused on growth, leadership and professional development.
The response was incredible, with more than 200 attendees
participating and engaging directly with experienced advisors. Based on the
success of the program, we look forward to expanding this experience at future
ASTA events, including the upcoming conference next year in Orlando.
Our goal is not only to expand access to mentorship but also
to help advisors understand how to build stronger mentoring relationships
within their own businesses and organizations.
The Future of Travel Starts with Leadership
At ASTA, we believe mentorship is the future of education.
Knowledge can be taught, but wisdom is shared. Experience
can be gained, but perspective is often developed through meaningful
relationships.
The travel industry has always been built on people —
relationships with clients, suppliers, partners and each other. By investing in
mentorship, we are investing in the people who will lead this industry forward.
The future of travel depends on the next generation of
leaders, and mentorship is one of the most powerful ways we can help build
them.
