Uniworld Boutique
River Cruises is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, marking five
decades of industry firsts and innovations that helped shape modern river
cruising. But, rather than resting on its laurels, Uniworld is celebrating its
golden anniversary by making bold new strides — rolling out new ships, fresh
destinations and even more unique itineraries, while also leaning even more
heavily into sustainability.
Founded in 1976,
Uniworld — a brand under The Travel Corporation — was one of the first
passenger river cruise companies in Europe and the first American brand to sail
the continent’s rivers. The company actually introduced many of the features
travelers now expect from luxury river cruising, including personal butler
service, longer itineraries and all-inclusive pricing.
Uniworld also
trailblazed with Cruise & Rail journeys, onboard wellness programs, Mystery
Cruises (where clients don’t learn about the ports of call ahead of time),
family-friendly Generations Collection sailings and Rivers of the World
itineraries that span multiple continents.
“Everything we do
begins with our guests,” said Ellen Bettridge, president and CEO of Uniworld
Boutique River Cruises. “For 50 years, we’ve listened closely, evolved
alongside our travelers and continually raised the bar for what luxury river
cruising can be. This anniversary is both a celebration of how far we’ve come
and an exciting look at where we’re headed next.”
What Does ‘Boutique’ Really Mean in River
Cruising?
Uniworld describes itself as “boutique,”
but what does that word really mean in terms of river cruising?
“‘Boutique’ at
Uniworld recognizes that sometimes the best things come in smaller packages,”
Bettridge explained. “This means more intimate ships with fewer guests and
exceptionally high staff-to-guest ratios, plus individualized interiors
designed to reflect the destinations you sail through. The entire journey
mirrors a five-star boutique hotel rather than a traditional cruise line.”
Although
Uniworld’s ships are smaller in size than those of some other lines, its
portfolio of itineraries is quite broad. Its fleet sails on 15 rivers in 33
different countries, spanning Europe, Asia, Africa and South America, with even
more destinations being planned for the future.
“Beyond
aesthetics, Uniworld delivers a truly all-inclusive experience, with curated
shore excursions, premium wines and spirits, gratuities, gourmet dining and
wellness programming all included. The result is a product that feels
immersive, thoughtful and indulgent rather than standardized,” Bettridge said.

And
personalization is built into every stage of the Uniworld journey, she says.
“Guests can choose
from multiple excursion styles, allowing them to travel at their own pace and
according to their interests,” she said. “That flexibility makes Uniworld ideal
for a wide range of travelers — from solo guests and couples to multigenerational
families.”
Bettridge added
that pre- and post-cruise extensions give guests more control over the length
and depth of their trips, while offerings such as Cruise & Rail journeys,
Rivers of the World sailings and Mystery Cruises provide added variety and
opportunities for further discovery.
What’s in Store for Uniworld’s 50th
Anniversary
In celebration of its five decades in
operation, Uniworld will throw a Golden Party onboard every 2026 European
sailing, along with other anniversary-related moments. The company is also
running a 50th Anniversary Sale, offering up to 30% off select 2026 voyages.
This year will
also see the introduction of two new Mystery Cruise voyages, wherein almost
every detail of the sailing will be a total surprise. And, for the first time
ever, these two itineraries can be combined into a Grand Mystery Cruise. In
2026, the line will also offer a 50-night Rivers of the World cruise spanning
three continents and four ships, as well as additional Generations Collection
sailings designed specifically for multigenerational families.

Leaning Into Sustainability
Uniworld’s
sustainability strategy, How We Tread Right, includes 11 long-term goals,
including achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. And, through its
signature Make Travel Matter experiences, clients take part in immersive
excursions that support both local communities and conservation efforts.
“Guests are
seeking deeper cultural connections, greater flexibility and more transparency
around sustainability,” Bettridge said. “Uniworld is well-positioned to meet
these expectations through our boutique scale. Our smaller ships allow us to
access both iconic waterways and lesser-visited ports, while delivering highly
personalized service.”
Bettridge says
that, by maintaining close connections with its guests, Uniworld is able to
gather feedback, adapt and evolve while also preserving the high-touch service
that sets it apart.
New Ships and New Horizons
Set to launch this spring, S.S. Emilie will
be Uniworld’s first newbuild vessel since 2020. The 154-passenger Super Ship
was inspired by Austrian painter Gustav Klimt and is named for his life partner
and muse, Emilie Flöge. Elements of Klimt’s signature style — including
dramatic jewel tones, pops of gold and art nouveau details — inform the ship’s
overall aesthetic. There will also be a one-of-a-kind dining venue, an elegant
lounge and innovative two-bedroom suites onboard.

S.S. Emilie will
also incorporate advanced sustainability features, including an optimized hull
and bow design for improved fuel efficiency; advanced navigation systems to
improve energy efficiency; engine aftertreatment systems that reduce emissions;
heat-recovery systems to lower energy consumption; battery packs to minimize
fuel use; and new gym equipment designed to reduce electrical reliance.
“We see evolving
expectations from today’s luxury traveler — from how they want to experience
destinations to how thoughtfully brands operate behind the scenes,” Bettridge
said.
And in 2027,
Uniworld plans to introduce four new ships and six new itineraries in its
largest expansion to date. Three new Super Ships — S.S. Audrey, S.S. Marlene
and S.S. São Rafael — will sail in Europe.
Inspired by
glamorous silver screen stars Audrey Hepburn and Marlene Dietrich, who were
both born in Europe, the layout of S.S. Audrey and S.S. Marlene will closely
resemble sister ship S.S. Emilie. S.S. São Rafael, meanwhile, will act as a
brother ship to S.S. São Gabriel and will expand Uniworld’s current offerings
on Portugal’s Douro River.
The brand will
also make its debut in Asia when the 15-suite expedition yacht, Aqua Blu, sails
just twice per year in Singapore and Indonesia.

Supporting Travel Advisors
To aid travel
advisors in selling the brand, Uniworld offers a collection of sales, marketing
and educational support materials.
“Supporting our advisor
community is a top priority for us, and we provide a wide range of tools
designed to help advisors sell more effectively, including complimentary access
to social media marketing platform Rallio and comprehensive advisor toolkits,”
Bettridge said. “We also offer Uniworld University, our online education
program, which provides exclusive advisor rates, CLIA certification credits,
Preferred Specialist listings on our website and a Uniworld Preferred
Specialist badge for email signatures.”
