Click on the slideshow to see the best affordable destinations in the USA for 2024.

Minneapolis-Saint Paul

2/25
Neither of the Twin Cities will leave you seeing double when it comes time for the bill. In Minneapolis, enjoy world-class collections at the Minneapolis Institute of Art & Walker Art Center (both free admission) before taking in some of the city's impressive murals dedicated to the likes of Bob Dylan & Prince and strolling through the city's famed Skyways. In Saint Paul, pay a visit to the award-winning Como Park Zoo and Conservatory (always free) before heading to Harriet Island for a selfie or taking a stroll down Summit Avenue, home to a collection of beautiful Victorian-era homes. It's worth noting as well that The Twin Cities also boast one of the nation's finest urban park systems.

Columbus, Ohio

3/25
The capital of the Buckeye State consistently comes in well under the national average when it comes to hotel rates and the city is full of fun things to do that won't cost you a penny. Stroll through the lovely campus of Ohio State University before seeing the Ohio Statehouse and stopping to smell the flowers at the Columbus Park of Roses. As a bonus, getting here shouldn't break the bank due to its location within a day's drive or a short flight from nearly half of Americans.

Tulsa, Oklahoma

4/25
If you like live music and good food but aren't a fan of blowing budgets, then Oklahoma's second-biggest city is the place for you. Start your trip off by cruising down Tulsa's impressive stretch of Route 66 (stopping to admire the fine Art Deco architecture along the way) and perusing the Living Arts of Tulsa and 108 Contemporary free art galleries before heading to one of the finest riverfront parks in the nation: The Gathering Place. Then, visit a culturally rich neighborhood like the Greenwood District and Arts District before heading out for a night on the town that will cost you less than in many other similar-sized cities.

Fargo, North Dakota

5/25
The biggest city in the Peace Garden State is the perfect place to get away for a few days without seeing your funds drained dry. Most attractions in this cool city cost in the single digits, but there are also a ton of free things to do. Post for a selfie by the iconic Fargo Theater downtown, stop by and see the original wood chipper from the film Fargo and see some great art in the Plains Art Museum or moving murals on the street: it's all free. And when it comes to food & drink, you'll consistently find purveyors dishing up great stuff and affordable prices.

Birmingham, Alabama

6/25
Birmingham won't break the bank but you might leave this hub of Alabama culture with your expectations shattered. For instance, take City Walk BHAM, a colorful new urban park that has breathed new life into an otherwise drab space under a highway overpass. Then there's the renowned Civil Rights District and Sloss Furnaces National Historic Landmark (both free to enjoy) and the city's famous icon Vulcan—the world's biggest cast iron statue—which is free to admire from afar, with a visit to the museum costing in the single digits.

San Antonio, Texas

7/25
In a state full of superlatives, San Antonio owns the title of Texas' number one tourist destination. The city is home to some of the most iconic sights in the country in The Alamo, River Walk and San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, all of which are free. After you've experienced those A-list attractions, make for Historic Market Square, home to the largest Mexican market in the nation, where you can have a dizzyingly fun shopping experience without dropping too much dosh.

Las Vegas, Nevada

8/25
You don't have to be a high roller to get treated to a host of free Vegas experiences. Pictures at the "Welcome to Las Vegas Sign" are free, as is the fun of walking through the Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens or Fremont Street Experience. To say nothing of the feeling of just walking down the Strip, taking in the sights and sounds of all the neon and people watching, which also won't cost you a thing. As a bonus, hotels in Vegas can be downright cheap during certain times of year.

Buffalo, New York

9/25
The Empire State's second biggest city takes the title when it comes to being budget-friendly. Buffalo offers a range of free experiences in the city (everything from lounging in the Canalside area to admiring great architechture) and at nearby Niagara Falls. To say nothing of the diverse array of global food that Buffalo dishes up at prices that will have you smiling.

Jacksonville, Florida

10/25
Florida is always a good idea, but there's no need to head all the way down south to have a great time as Jax offers much of the Sunshine State's best at budget-friendly prices. Home to the largest urban park system in the nation, a host of minor league sports teams with affordable tickets and enthralling cultural attractions, the city will deliver a getaway that won't wipe out your funds. To say nothing of the miles upon miles of sandy beach will cost you exactly nothing to enjoy.

Fort Worth, Texas

11/25
Get a true taste of the West in Fort Worth without the sky high prices in some other locations. Make for the Stockyards to see the legendary—and world's only—twice-daily cattle drive before soaking in the Water Gardens, a marvel of engineering and artistic flair that will leave you refreshed in more ways than one. The city is also home to standout budget-friendly barbecue spots and Billy Bob's, which is the world's largest honky tonk.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

12/25
You'll love all the budget-friendly things you can do in The City of Brotherly Love. Start off at the Independence National Historic Park, which arguably offers the densest collection of heavy-hitting historical sights in the USA. Then, spend some time relaxing in one of the city's peaceful squares or visit free attractions like the "Rocky Steps", the "Love" statue and the United States Mint, none of which will cost you a dime.

Rapid City, South Dakota

13/25
Make sure you've brushed up on your history, because you'll have a blast recreating it (for free!) in Rapid City. The City of Presidents is home to statues of all former presidents (everyone from Washington to Obama is currently on display), weaved together by a free walking tour. Elsewhere, Main Street Square is always entertaining, Dinosaur Park perpetually puts smiles on faces and the nearby Black Hills are full of free or budget-friendly sights like Mount Rushmore, The Indian Museum of North America and the scenic Spearfish Canyon National Byway.

Knoxville, Tennessee

14/25
Offering one of the South's best price-per-fun-pursuit ratios, Knoxville might end up being your new favorite city. Take a stroll on the free Cradle of Country Music walking tour to learn about the city's fundamental role in the forming of one of America's most cherished native music styles before setting off to explore the sprawling Knoxville's Urban Wilderness, which is home to Over 60 miles of greenways and trails. Then, track down some of the city's signature street murals or mouthwatering food; you'll be pleased that the latter features a much lower price tag than other locales.

Kansas City, Missouri

15/25
KC competes across the board with the biggest names in the country while keeping things remarkably budget-friendly. Hop on the KC Street Car for a journey through the heart of downtown before admiring one of the city's famous fountains: neither activity will cost you a thing. Add a myriad of museums & historical sights, multiple districts bubbling over with fun and legendary barbecue and you have a truly elite destination.

Memphis, Tennessee

16/25
Memphis boasts below average hotel prices and a wealth of free attractions like the iconic Beale Street (it doesn't cost a thing to soak up the atmosphere) and the twice-daily march of the Peabody Ducks at the Peabody Hotel. Even with attractions with admission fees like Graceland and the National Civil Rights Museum, you'll find an off the charts value proposition.

Tucson, Arizona

17/25
Take a walk on The Turquoise Trail to learn all about the history of this city and get some exercise while you're at it. Despite being free, the experience is full of rich fascinating sights. Just outside of downtown, the city's Mission San Xavier del Bac historical mission is a sight to behold, and it's free to visit too. Last but not least, the city's signature purple and orange sunsets will never cost a thing and may be the highlight of your time in Tucson.

Albuquerque, New Mexico

18/25
Offering all the allure and mystique of some other Southwest destinations that have trended upward in price, New Mexico's biggest city is full of big-time fun things to do that come with a small price tag. Just a few of the free—or very affordable—attractions in or around ABQ are Petroglyph National Monument, the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center, The University of New Mexico Museums and the Anderson-Abruzzo Albuquerque International Balloon Museum.

Indianapolis, Indiana

19/25
From the rolling greenspace of White River State Park to the urban buzz of Monument Circle, Indy has everything you need for a surprising—and budget-friendly—getaway. Start things off with a lazy stroll along downtown's Canal Walk before tracking down one of the city's famous "NDY" signs, where you can pose as the missing "I". When it comes time to go out for dinner or drinks, Indy hits well above its weight across the spectrum of styles and formats, but generally at lower price points than some of its fellow big Midwestern cities.

Sacramento, California

20/25
The capital of the Golden State won't leave you wondering where all your travel funds have gone. No, in Sacramento you can dine on farm-to-table meals for considerably less than some of the other big cities in the state. Throw in the opportunity to learn about the past and present of the state for free at sights like the California State Capitol Museum and Old Sacramento historic district and you have a hidden gem hiding in plain sight.

Richmond, Virginia

21/25
Long been overshadowed by bigger cities in the region, this up-and-coming city owns an unmatched combination of cosmopolitan flair and budget-friendly nature. Take to the Virginia Capital Trail or James River Park System for trails that show off the region's natural beauty (for free) or see how many of the city's famed murals you can capture on your phone. To say nothing of Richmond's well respected craft brewery scene that will see your glass overflow without a drain on your wallet.

Gatlinburg, Tennessee

22/25
One of America's all-time classic family destinations, Gatlinburg will fill your memory bank with good times without draining your bank account. Accommodation is consistently reasonable here and the list of free attractions is lengthy, with just a few examples including riverside strolls, trolley rides and sunrise viewing sessions at the Gatlinburg Overlook. This is to say nothing of the host of fun attractions that pride themselves on family-friendly prices.

St. Augustine, Florida

23/25
It won't cost you a penny to soak up the handsome Spanish colonial architecture and history all around you in St. Augustine, which is famous for being America's oldest city. For starters, St. Augustine is home to great sweeps of beach, which won't cost a thing to visit and the same can be said for Fort Matanzas National Monument.

Omaha, Nebraska

24/25
The Midwest may be the capital of budget-friendly cities, and the Upper Midwest section may be home to some of the best values in the region. Omaha offers all the allure of some bigger cities without the corresponding price tag. Hotels are wallet-friendly while attractions like the famous Bob Kerry Pedestrian Bridge, the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, First National's Spirit of Nebraska's Wilderness and Pioneer Courage Park are absolutely free to enjoy.

Milwaukee, Wisconsin

25/25
Located on the shores of Lake Michigan, Milwaukee will never cost you as much as you expect. Explore the Milwaukee Public Market, admiring the stall holders' wares and the wonderful building design before settling on a local snack, which is sure to offer incredible value compared to other metropolises. Then, take a stroll on the Milwaukee RiverWalk, where you can say hi to the bronze statue of "The Fonz" from Happy Days, the classic TV show set here. And when it comes time to eat & drink at night, you'll be pleasantly surprised at the numbers at the bottom of the bill.
