Travel between the United States and Canada continued to
rebound in August, even as a worsening trade dispute between the two countries
created new uncertainty for cross-border tourism.
According to Global
News, Canadians made 2.6 million return trips from the U.S. in August, an
8.8 percent increase from August 2025 and the fifth consecutive month of
year-over-year growth.
The increase came as Canada and the U.S. moved further apart
on trade, with negotiations collapsing in August after Canadian Prime Minister
Mark Carney said the U.S. had sought last-minute concessions that were
unacceptable.
The trade dispute has since escalated with new tariffs and
retaliatory measures.
Despite recent gains, Canadian travel to the U.S. remains
well below pre-trade-war levels, with road trips down 27.4% from August 2024
and air travel down 22.7%.
Road travel posted a stronger annual rebound in August, with
Canadian trips to the U.S. up 9.9% from the previous year. Air
travel also increased, rising 3.6% year over year.
