The United States’ Department of State has issued updated travel advisors for two major European destinations as the fall travel season kicks off: Italy and the United Kingdom.
The State Department didn’t change Italy’s Level 2 travel advisory, but added information encouraging travelers to the country known for its history and culinary gems to exercise increased caution because of the threat of terrorism and petty crime.
Americans have been warned about an increased global risk for terrorism since the United States began its war against Iran.
As for petty crime, the advisory explains that it’s “common, especially in popular tourist locations and on public transportation, including trains. Stay aware of your surroundings. Most crimes against foreigners are crimes of opportunity, like purse snatching, pickpocketing, and car break-ins.”
The United Kingdom's Level 2 travel advisory has remained unchanged but includes updated information, including the threat of terrorism. The threat indicators for civil unrest and crime were also removed.
The advisory also explained that “There is also risk of isolated violence by dissident groups in Northern Ireland. These groups mainly target police and military.” Those heading to Northern Ireland should stay aware of their surroundings.
