Google's Most-Searched Travel Destinations of 2019

Trending Travel Destination Searches 2019

1/11
Google has just released its "Year in Search 2019" report, compiling the top-trending online search subjects of the year, including data on which destinations Americans were most researching online. The list reflects which locations are trending in online searches, but not necessarily which were the most popular among travelers, said CNBC. The rankings may reveal rising interest in places that people are aspiring to go to, as well as where they may actually be visiting. That said, the following are the top ten travel destinations that saw the highest spikes in searches among U.S. users over 2018.

1. Maldives

2/11
A small, south Asian nation, the Maldives consists of a chain of atolls situated in the tropical, translucent turquoise waters of the Arabian Sea. Famed for its unbelievably vibrant waters, coral reefs and exotic marine life, the Maldives has become an elite haven for private-island resorts, which often tout incredible overwater villas that place guests in the midst of the astounding equatorial sea. Though highly remote and perhaps an unrealistic option for many, this otherworldly paradise is now visible to all through the miracle of the internet and is, apparently, dominating our collective wanderlust.

2. Japan

3/11
CNBC reported that the United Nations World Tourism Organization recently determined that Japan posted the second-highest growth in international tourism receipts, behind Australia. Besides being a fascinating destination in its own right, Tokyo's hosting of the 2020 Olympics was bound to spark some curiosity among American internet users about the Asian nation and tourism to Japan is bound to boom in light of the upcoming international event.

3. Bora Bora

4/11
Next up is Bora Bora, the French Polynesian gem is enjoying renewed interest among travelers, which saw arrivals start to wane in the 2000s. Sitting atop an extinct volcano in the middle of the ocean, this tropical paradise is famous for its crystalline lagoon and sugary sands; and remains a world-renowned diving destination, teeming with colorful marine life, including sharks of the friendly variety, rays and even whales.

4. Las Vegas

5/11
If ever there were a municipal manifestation of the term "extra", it must be Las Vegas. Famous for everything from massive neon signage, showbiz glamour, and whopping jackpots to gutter punks and sleazy adult entertainment venues, Las Vegas boasts a continuously broad appeal. Visitors come for an almost infinite variety of reasons, including to engage in every imaginable type of gambling; participate in pre-marital mayhem or obtain quickie marriage licenses; witness some world-class entertainment spectacles; or perhaps just to enjoy ultra-luxurious accommodations and attend the epic club scene. This booming metropolis in the middle of the Nevada desert successfully draws all kinds of tourists, from families with kids to MICE travelers, and from celebrities and high-rollers to grannies just looking to play the slots.

5. Mexico

6/11
It comes as no surprise that Americans are researching ways to visit our nearest southern neighbor, especially given the vast diversity of terrains, microclimates, cultural practices and artistic styles to be found across Mexico between its Pacific and Caribbean coasts. While Mexico may come in fifth in terms of internet search volume, it is almost certainly the number one spot where Americans actually end up spending their vacations.

6. Alaska

7/11
Alaska boasts many more tourism draws than the legendary Northern Lights, although those do occupy a spot on most people's bucket lists. The state's majestic landscapes and abundant wildlife offer a wealth of opportunities for outdoor adventuring, plus seasonal festivities and sporting events. It's also common to enjoy the arctic experience from the comfort of a cruise ship, which can bring guests astonishingly close to massive glaciers and also offer land-based excursions.

7. New Orleans

8/11
New Orleans, Louisiana was born out of a unique marriage of French, Spanish, African, and Native American cultures and traditions, which is evident in everything from its one-of-a-kind culinary offerings to its famed music scene and historic architecture. Iconic images of the Big Easy, like festive Mardi Gras floats and the nostalgic buildings that line the French Quarter, have permeated public consciousness, so it's no wonder that many Americans dream of enjoying the real Southern experience in this gorgeous city.

8. California

9/11
Also falling on the domestic side of travel, California rolls in eighth on Google's list. The Golden State serves as a beacon of hope for residents of many other states when the local autumn chill sets in or they're being plagued by winter storms. Besides the temperate weather, California's allure can be attributed to its many well-known attractions, including Los Angeles' Hollywood and Beverly Hills; Napa Valley's wine country and northern California's majestic Redwood forests; San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge and iconic historic districts; as well as widespread surf culture, since the state stretches along much of the country's Pacific coastline.

9. New York

10/11
It seems like New York City's search popularity would require no explanation. The Big Apple is arguably the U.S.'s most vibrant and diverse city, not to mention its most populous. Besides the volume of business interactions that brings people into the city, New York remains a top pick for those who want to experience the epitome of American art, entertainment, cultural and culinary experiences, seasonal happenings and displays, and shopping opportunities. Its long-held reputation as a touchpoint for the American Dream, its many iconic edifices and celebrated institutions, and the backlog of the cultural lore that originated here is enough to keep NYC at the forefront of people's minds, not to mention that it remains a massive center for media coverage.

10. Costa Rica

11/11
For outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers, Costa Rica is an incredible choice and it has gained popularity among eco-tourists on account of its uniquely rich biodiversity. In fact, more than 25 percent of this politically stable Central American country consists of national parks and protected areas. Costa Rica's landscapes include, not only sprawling rainforests, but also impressive volcanoes, mountains, lakes, rivers and spectacular beaches. Visitors to the capital city of San Jose will find plenty of historic sites, museums, parks and a National Theater.
