Success Stories focus on veteran travel advisors and how they achieved success. Here’s a look at Tamoy Thelwell, founder of LuxeStyle Travel.

How did you get your start as a travel advisor?

I began my journey as a travel advisor over a decade ago, and it all started with a role as a marketing coordinator at a travel agency in Miami. It was during this time that I discovered my deep passion for the travel industry. From the very beginning, I found myself captivated by every aspect of the business, from building relationships with travel vendors to the intricacies of sales. It was clear to me that I wanted to turn this passion into a lifelong career. I saw selling beautiful travel experiences as a wonderful way to make a living. And the travel perks are definitely amazing too.

How did you build your business over the years?

I focused on specializing in the luxury travel market. I was truly fascinated by the art of crafting high-end experiences for affluent travelers. To build my business, I dedicated countless hours to expanding my knowledge of the different cruise lines and hotels and villa products, networking with industry professionals (which I think is the most important element in building your business), and continuously honing my skills. I was always open to learning everything about driving a successful travel business. I never said, “That’s not my job.” I was eager to learn every role and learn the skills required for that role because I knew it would help me understand selling travel and satisfying my clients.

Building a strong foundation of expertise in luxury travel, creating good habits and nurturing a positive reputation enabled me to attract clients who were seeking unique and exceptional experiences. Also, with my background in business marketing, I always understood branding. You as an individual are a brand. Even if you work for a company, you need to understand you still represent you. For example, I love to talk about individual brand equity; how much value do you bring? And what is your perceived value as a travel advisor or professional for your clients and vendors? What people say about you when you are not around is extremely important. And I carried that philosophy from day one.

All of that then relates to word of mouth and referrals from satisfied clients and colleagues who also played a significant role in growing my business. Referrals can also go a long way with vendors because they will invest in you and your brand, which can in turn help you with extra perks, tips and savings that you can pass on to your clients.

What characteristics make you a successful advisor?

Several characteristics have contributed to my success as a travel advisor. Firstly, my unwavering passion to learn and master the travel industry has been a driving force. This passion fuels my dedication to constantly grow and improve. I love learning how to connect the dots of the business.

My ability to brand myself.I believe I’ve been able to stand firm in my business strategies but not be abrasive to turn people off while I am delivering my services and expertise. I always say, “You are only as good as your last interaction that leaves an impression.”

I also know my approach to building and nurturing relationships has been key. In the travel business, cultivating strong connections with travel vendors, fellow advisors and clients is essential. This industry is so small. You never know when professionals will change roles. You may need a favor or assistance. You should make it a point to be friendly with everyone in your path in this industry.

Lastly, adaptability and staying current with industry trends have helped me remain competitive and relevant in a constantly evolving market.

What have been your greatest challenges?

One of the most significant challenges I’ve encountered in my journey is navigating interactions with individuals who may not be supportive of my success. It’s not uncommon to encounter naysayers or those who attempt to discourage you along the way. Some may even disagree with your chosen strategies or direction. However, in the face of such challenges, it’s crucial to maintain self-belief and become your own staunchest advocate.

What have your greatest accomplishments been?

One that stands out prominently is the decision to establish and build a reputable name for myself by running my own successful travel business during 2020 when travel was on pause. This entrepreneurial endeavor has allowed me to shape my own path in the travel industry, create a brand known for exceptional service, and curate memorable and unique experiences. This includes collaborating with influencers like Chef Ben Robinson from Bravo’s Below Deck, travel brands and other travel professionals. This accomplishment is a testament to years of hard work, dedication and a passion for providing clients with top-tier travel solutions tailored to their needs and desires.

What tips can you provide advisors new to the industry?

Cultivate a deep passion for travel and an unwavering commitment to excellence in your work. Continuously expand your knowledge and consider specializing in a niche market that aligns with your interests. Build strong relationships with travel vendors, fellow advisors and clients to create a robust support network. Be prepared for industry changes and challenges and remain adaptable to evolving circumstances. Develop the skills to craft personalized, memorable experiences for your clients. Stay up to date with industry trends and technological advancements to remain competitive. Build trust with your clients by always acting in their best interests and providing honest, transparent advice.
