One month into 2026, and air travel news is already buzzing with historic new plane orders, sweeping airport construction projects, and airlines that are expanding premium products to new routes and hubs.

Entities across the industry, from airlines to government agencies, have started the new year off with a litany of exciting announcements and initiatives that will make 2026 one of the most innovative years in air travel in recent history.

Based on the headlines that broke in January, the year ahead will bring faster security checkpoints across the United States, gleaming new airport terminals, brand new aircraft types, and more.

Here’s a look at the biggest air travel news of January 2026.

Airports and Agencies Announced Major Upgrades

In 2026, airports across the U.S. will be getting a glow-up. Passengers can expect swanky new lounge opens and newly built terminals, as well as new technology behind the scenes of air traffic control and TSA.

In early January, Hawaiian Airlines announced a major $600 million upgrade initiative that includes renovation projects on lobby areas and gates across airports on many of the islands. The renovations will result in “bright, elegant open spaces and better seating and amenities,” the airline said.

One of the fastest growing airports in the nation, Texas’ Austin Bergstrom International Airport (AUS), announced a major expansion plan that will unfold over the course of the next 10 years. The expansion will add a new concourse and up to 32 new gates to the facility.

Elsewhere, Capital One announced a new forthcoming lounge at another key hub airport in the South: Charlotte Douglas International (CLT). The opulent space will offer amenities like workstations, cuisine with local dishes, and walls of windows overlooking the tarmac.

Government agencies like TSA and FAA also announced upgrades to existing programs, including the expansion of Touchless ID biometric scans for TSA PreCheck customers, which allows passengers to confirm their ID at the checkpoint in moments, and the assigning of contracts to suppliers who will help overhaul the nation’s air traffic control system.

New Aircraft Coming to Airline Fleets

Throughout the month, airlines placed notable orders for new planes. Delta, for one, announced it would order up to 60 new Boeing 787 Dreamliner planes to continue expanding its high-demand transatlantic and South American routes.

Similarly, Alaska Airlines announced a historic aircraft order of 105 Boeing 737-10 airplanes and options for 35 more, plus five Boeing 787 widebody jets, which will be used for the carrier’s continued long-haul expansion from Seattle to Europe. The order is the largest-ever in the airline’s history.

Coinciding with Alaska’s massive fleet order was the news that Boeing expects to certify both the 737 Max 10 and the 737 Max 7 planes by the end of 2026. That would be a huge milestone because the aircraft manufacturer has more than 1,200 orders for the Max 10 in its backlog.

In-Flight Dining Gets a Refresh

To kick off the new year, several carriers announced new onboard dining initiatives to bring new meal options to the sky in 2026. Dallas-based American Airlines announced it would be adding a new meal from iconic Texas barbecue restaurant Pecan Lodge. Passengers in first class flying from Dallas-Fort Worth to New York LaGuardia or New York JFK can enjoy a barbecue platter with Pecan Lodge’s brisket sandwich, smoked sausage, macaroni and cheese, and cole slaw.

Air France will be shaking up the menus in its swanky new La Premiere first class cabin for passengers departing from its hub in Paris. The upgraded menus come from Michelin-starred French chef Anne-Sophie Pic and feature options like roast chicken served with a spicy mushroom sauce, corn, and grilled polenta.

For fliers at the back of the plane, United Airlines launched the option to pre-order meals in economy class up to five days in advance on flights over 1,190 miles within the U.S., Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Premium Airline Products Continued to Expand

Following a year that saw unprecedented demand for premium airline seats and services, carriers around the globe continued to expand their premium products in January 2026.

Air France announced it would add its popular refreshed La Premiere first class cabin to four new routes to Paris in 2026: Atlanta, Boston, Houston, and Tel Aviv, operating every day aboard select Boeing 777-300ER aircraft.

Similarly, Emirates announced it would expand its premium economy cabin to 10 new destinations in 2026, including cities like Brisbane, Australia; Mexico City; and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

In the U.S., Delta unveiled expanded Delta One premium check-in areas to all of its eight hub airports across the country. The exclusive areas afford a VIP experience, with a place to relax during check-in and amenities such as personalized assistance from Delta’s Premium Service Ambassadors, snacks, and refreshments.

Finally, at the end of December 2025, JetBlue announced it would be launching a new domestic first class product in 2026, which will offer a recliner-style premium cabin that brand loyalists are calling “Mini Mint.” The new premium cabin will roll out on all planes that do not currently have Mint business class, starting in June 2026.
