It’s time for
people in the Pacific Northwest to party.
Alaska Airlines
will launch its first nonstop flight from Oregon's Portland International Airport (PDX) to Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport (MSY) in the Big Easy.
The route will begin January in time for Mardi Gras 2025.
The flight will be
daily through next spring. Currently, the flights are scheduled to depart at 9:05 a.m. local time from PDX.
“Alaska’s
continued investment in PDX is great news for our travel community. Until now,
New Orleans was one of the largest U.S. markets without a nonstop from PDX,”
said Dan Pippenger, chief aviation officer at the Port of Portland, in a statement. “Tens of thousands of travelers already fly between these two great
cities every year, and we expect that number to only grow with this new nonstop
service.”
In
addition to the annual Mardi Gras celebration that is centered around Lent, New
Orleans has been the host of the Super Bowl 10 times. That’s just one behind
Miami. Between the Sugar Bowl in college football, the Super Bowl and the Mardi
Gras celebration, New Orleans is one of the most desirable destinations early in
the year.
Said Kirsten
Amrine, vice president of revenue management and network planning for Alaska
Airlines: "As the largest carrier in Portland for more than 20 years, it’s
important we continue to expand the nonstop destinations we offer our guests
and give them choices when planning their next trip."
Tickets are currently on sale.
The
Big Easy will be the 55th destination for Alaska Airlines out of its hub at PDX.
The
carrier also said last month it
would begin to develop a new training center in the state of Washington.
