Terminal 4 at Cancun International Airport will undergo a $399 million (8 billion pesos) expansion project.

Mexico’s federal Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources has just approved a terminal expansion, which will be undertaken by managing company Aeroportuario del Sureste (Asur), according to Riviera Maya News.

The plans call for doubling Terminal 4’s size and adding a new control tower to the busy airport. The terminal to be expanded is currently about 79,000 square feet and covers two floors.

“Given the growth of Terminal 4, it is operationally necessary to incorporate a control tower into the project to control the movement of aircraft on the platform,” according to the project paperwork.

About 63 hectares of land will be changing in order to accommodate the expanded terminal, Riviera Maya News reported. The project will impact land that is located west of Huayacán Avenue.

Construction work is expected to take about five years.

The money being spent on Terminal 4 is the largest sum being spent by Asur of the nine airport improvement projects taking place around Mexico.

In 2023, Cancun’s airport processed 32.3 million passengers.

“Cancun is the most important tourist area in the country. The number of visitors increases year after year, with more than 70 percent of tourists using air transportation. Associated with this, the increase in flights has caused the area designated for the maneuvers and attention of passengers and aircraft to need to be expanded,” Manuel Gutiérrez Solá, the Commercial Director of Asur said.

The new terminal expansion project is just the latest news regarding Cancun International Airport. In September, airport officials announced that several new direct flights from key U.S. and Canadian cities were being made available.

The new flights are also part of the broader effort to enhance operations and facilities at the airport, which is one of the 50 busiest in the world.

Additional improvements being made at the airport include infrastructure upgrades and new sustainability-focused initiatives, all of which are meant to transform travel to the region, according to a press release from the airport.
