British budget air carrier Wizz Air is seeking approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation to operate transatlantic flights between the United Kingdom and the United States.
According to Reuters, the air carrier scaled back its plans to expand into the Middle East last year, prompting them to look out towards the United States instead. Its plans to fly to destinations like Abu Dhabi had to be ceased due to political tensions within the region.
A filing showed Wizz Air UK seeking passenger services under the 2020 Air Transport Agreement known as the Open Skies Agreement, mentioning that it hopes to receive a foreign air carrier permit “as soon as possible.”
The 2026 World Cup is expected to welcome more international travelers to the United States, and the air carrier might hope to capitalize on the global sporting event.
Wizz Air currently flies between destinations in the United Kingdom to major cities and destinations throughout Europe, as well as a few others like Marrakech and Dubai.
