Travelers planning trips across the United States have a new
resource to help navigate marijuana laws, with a recently released guide
outlining where visitors can legally purchase cannabis and what restrictions
apply in each state.
Alexis 420, a directory of licensed cannabis dispensaries,
has published a 50-state cannabis travel guide covering purchasing
requirements, identification rules, taxes, and restrictions impacting
out-of-state visitors.
According to the guide, adults 21 and older can purchase
recreational marijuana at licensed dispensaries in 23 states, while 10
additional states and Washington, D.C., offer purchasing options for visiting
medical marijuana patients.
Another 17 states do not offer state-licensed cannabis sales to tourists.
Where Tourists Can Legally Buy Marijuana
States allowing recreational marijuana purchases by eligible
out-of-state visitors include California, Colorado, Nevada, New York, New
Jersey, Massachusetts, Michigan, Arizona, and Washington.
However, regulations vary by destination. Illinois imposes
lower purchase limits on nonresidents than residents, while Ohio requires
marijuana possessed in the state to have been bought from an Ohio dispensary.
Medical marijuana patients face additional restrictions. Some states recognize qualifying
out-of-state medical cards, while others require visitors to complete a
temporary registration before making purchases.
Travelers should also consider local taxes, accepted
identification, dispensary operating hours, and restrictions on public
consumption when researching their destinations.
What Holiday Travelers Should Know
The guide arrives ahead of the Thanksgiving and year-end
holiday travel seasons, when millions of Americans are expected to visit
family, take vacations, and travel across state lines.
AAA projected that 81.8 million Americans would travel at
least 50 miles from home during Thanksgiving 2025, including approximately 73 million
traveling by automobile, illustrating the scale of holiday road travel.
For travelers visiting states where recreational marijuana
is legal, understanding the difference between purchasing cannabis at their
destination and transporting it across state lines is crucial.
Recreational marijuana remains prohibited under federal law,
and transporting it between states can violate federal regulations, even when
both states permit recreational sales.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) also advises
that screening procedures focus on aviation security rather than drug searches.
However, officers who discover illegal substances during screening refer the
matter to law enforcement.
Additional Restrictions for Travelers
For travelers, legal purchases do not automatically permit
marijuana consumption in public places, hotels, rental vehicles, or other
accommodations.
Tourists should review individual hotel and vacation rental
policies, as well as local restrictions, before making purchases. Marijuana
also remains subject to federal restrictions on national park property and
other federal lands.
International travelers face additional considerations, as
cannabis possession can carry serious criminal penalties in foreign countries, regardless
of whether marijuana is legal in their home state.
