On Sunday, a domestic flight in India was forced to make an emergency landing after a foul smell from one of the bathrooms onboard filled the plane.
According to GulfNews.com, SpiceJet Flight SG 192 was en route from Bengaluru to New Delhi when the pilot called on air traffic controllers to clear the runway for an emergency landing at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Hyderabad.
The Boeing 737 was carrying 184 passengers, including four infants, at the time of the emergency landing, which flight attendants said was caused by an "extremely pungent smell" that came from one of the bathrooms on the plane.
When the smell reached the cockpit, the pilots decided to divert the flight to Hyderabad.
After the aircraft landed safely at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport with no injuries reported, a cleaning crew boarded the plane and removed the smell from the lavatory. After a delay of about an hour, the flight resumed its journey to New Delhi.
Onboard bathrooms have caused major headaches for airlines in recent years. In 2016, a passenger flying for the first time in China caused a major delay when she thought the exit door was actually for the bathroom, causing an evacuation slide to deploy.
