Hawaiian Airlines offered a firstlook today at its new 787-9 Dreamliner cabin design, a space that’s inspired by early Polynesian voyages and includes new Leihōkū Suites.

Expected to begin service early next year on specific routes, the planes feature cabin design that’s meant to evoke Hawaiʻi’s rich natural world through bold textures, island-inspired sunrise and sunset lighting, and sinuous ocean and wind patterns, the airline said.

The 300-seat planes also include 34 "suites" that were created to envelop guests in a peaceful, elegant space, which includes fully lie-flat seating, an 18-inch in-flight entertainment screen, personal outlets, wireless charging, and direct aisle access. The suites also have doors that can be closed to provide privacy or opened to create a shared experience via combined double seats.

The aircraft’s main cabin, meanwhile, includes 266 Collins Aerospace Aspire seats with ergonomically contoured back and armrests and a lightweight, modern design that was created to maximize seat space and offer more shoulder and hip room. The seats also include 12-inch seat back monitors with USB-A and USB-C charging ports. The main cabin also includes 79 Extra Comfort seats that provide more legroom and access to AC outlets.

“The combination of our evocative cabin design and unparalleled service will make our 787 the most relaxing and enjoyable choice for travel to and from Hawaiʻi,” Avi Mannis, chief marketing and communications officer at Hawaiian Airlines, said in a statement. “The design and details of this product truly reflect what it means to be the flagship carrier of the Hawaiian Islands.”

Each design element of Hawaiian’s 787 celebrates Polynesian navigators who sailed the Pacific by observing the stars, sun, winds, waves and wildlife. The airline worked with design consultant Teague to achieve its vision of honoring Pacific navigation in a modern aircraft.

“Working alongside such an iconic brand in Hawaiian Airlines, we were able to create an experience that is true and authentic to what is Hawai’i,” Loreto Julian, interior design and surface textile design manager at Teague, said in a statement. “Along the journey, guests will be able to appreciate the culture of Hawai’i and be surprised with discoverable moments.”

The plane's interior also pays homage to Hawaiʻi’s pristine environment, from wall panels depicting native wood grains to lavatory floors inspired by shimmering black volcanic sand. The Hawaiian language has also been integrated into the cabin design, including via seat row numbers and other placards that are used to guide guests through the cabin as they embark on a journey.

Some of the additional highlights of the new plane include:

  • Enhanced cabin air filtration and a carbon-fiber composite airframe that permits travel at a lower cabin altitude, resulting in a more comfortable flight.
  • Acoustic-treated engine inlets that provide a quieter cabin
  • Extra-large, dimmable windows
  • Lavatory toilets and faucets with touchless activation
  • Fuel-efficient wide-body aircraft built with innovative aerodynamics and modern-General Electric GEnx engines. The plane is significantly more fuel efficient than prior-generation, similarly sized aircraft.
  • Simulated cabin sky that depicts soft daylight, soothing sunrise and sunsets or dramatic starry evening skies.
