Hawaiian Airlines will soon be the only airline permitted to fly from the U.S. to Haneda Airport in Tokyo, the U.S. Department of Transportation told USA Today.
The announcement came on Friday, along with the stipulation that the airline would begin the nighttime service by Jan. 29, 2017, USA Today reported.

"This is tremendous news for Hawaiian Airlines, for our employees, our customers, and for the economies of Kona and our entire state," Hawaiian Airlines CEO Mark Dunkerley told USA Today.
Haneda is often preferred over the Narita International Airport because of its proximity to downtown Tokyo. But Hawaiian was the only airline that applied for the one slot to continue landing there at night, the newspaper said.

What the U.S. airlines are really fighting for are the five available daytime slots at Haneda Airport, USA Today reported. United, American, Delta and Hawaiian are all hoping to be able to fly in and out of Haneda between 6 a.m. and 10:55 p.m. daily.
