JetBlue
Airways is playing defense against United Airlines.
JetBlue asked
the Department of Transportation this week to disqualify United from
implementing five new routes into Washington’s Ronald Reagan National Airport.
The route JetBlue
specifically identified was from Los Angeles, but United also announced it
would have an expansion
from San Francisco International into Washington.
JetBlue argues that United’s proposed flight into LAX from Washington would leave at 7 a.m., which is too early and prohibited by Congress.
A decision
on the application by United is expected by the Transportation Department later
this month.
United
declined to comment and will wait for the DOT decision.
Reagan National
is one of the most congested airports in the country because of its proximity
to downtown Washington. Turnabout is apparently fair play, however – United tried
to block Delta from implementing a third flight between Seattle and Washington.
Southwest
Airlines has also applied for a route between Washington and Las Vegas.
American
Airlines, the largest carrier at Reagan National, has applied for a flight from
San Antonio to the nation’s capital, and Alaska Airlines is looking to fly
between San Diego and Washington.
